“Great Depression” Definition: Copy the following definition in your notes. A severe economic depression that caused failures of banks, high unemployment, and low productivity that lasted from about 1929-1940.

Causes of The Great Depression: The stock market crash On October 29th, 1929 alone, stocks fell 14 billion dollars. In other words, 14 billion dollars essentially vanished from the economy. YIKES! This led some banks and people who invested their money into the market to lose everything.

Cause #2 Weak Banking Structure Banks were mostly unregulated (without laws to keep them in check) Unregulated Banking institutions lent huge amounts of money for stock purchases. Savings LOST!! GONE!! VANISHED!!

Cause #3 Over production & disparity in wealth OVERPRODUCTION.. oops supply was outpacing demand In 1929, the wealthiest 1 percent earned as much as the bottom 42 percent. Tax policies heavily favored the wealthiest Americans Fun Fact: 2012: Top 1% earn 19.3% of household income

Great Depression Photo Analysis: In your notes, you will analyze three photographs of your choosing. What is happening in this picture? If there are people in the photo: How are they dressed?
