The Atmosphere. Atmosphere Atmosphere Made up of mostly nitrogen and oxygen Protects us from the Sun “atmo” means air/vapor Also contains dust, volcanic.
Our Atmosphere Our atmosphere helps us in two very important ways. –It acts as a blanket by holding in the amount of heat needed to keep earth livable.

A IR P RESSURE N OTES 7 th Grade. A TMOSPHERE Is a mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth. What are some unique characteristics you can think of about.
Atmosphere. Earth’s atmosphere reaches from Earth’s surface to 40,000 miles from Earth’s surface. The farther you travel from Earth’s surface the less.
Layers of the Atmosphere
 Earth’s atmosphere is divided into several different atmospheric layers extending from the Earth’s surface outward: › Troposphere › Stratosphere › Mesosphere.
Atmospheric Basics SWBAT describe the composition of the atmosphere; compare and contrast the layers of atmosphere; identify the three methods of transferring.

Presentation transcript:

Objective 11: I can define ozone layer and greenhouse effect Ozone layer: a layer of O3 in the stratosphere, it absorbs ultraviolet rays, which stops them from reaching the surface of the earth Greenhouse effect: the process by which heat is trapped in the atmosphere by water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and other gases that form a “Blanket” around the Earth.

Objective 12: I can describe how altitude affects air pressure and temperature Altitude: used to describe the height of something in relation to sea level on Earth. Altitude and Air Pressure: Altitude , Air Pressure Altitude and Temperature: Troposphere - Altitude , Temperature Stratosphere – Altitude , Temperature Mesosphere – Altitude , Temperature Thermosphere – Altitude , Temperature

Objective 13: I can explain the composition of air Air is mainly made up of: 78% NITROGEN 21% OXYGEN (O2) 1% Other gases – mainly water vapor (H2O), and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and other trace gases

Water vapor and Carbon Dioxide

Composition of the Atmosphere Remember: Composition of the Atmosphere “Never (Nitrogen) Open (Oxygen) Canned (Carbon Dioxide) Worms” (Water Vapor)

AIR MOLECULES

It is a thin layer of gases surrounding the earth The Atmosphere It is a thin layer of gases surrounding the earth Gases include Nitrogen, Oxygen, Water Vapor, Carbon Dioxide and others. Particles are also a part of the atmosphere It is ESSENTIAL to our survival and life on earth
