Human body systems part II Ch. 31.2 Central Nervous System

THE BRAIN Contains billions of neurons (excitable cell that processes and transmits information by electrical and chemical signaling) processes, relays, and form responses to a large amount of information every moment.

Spinal Cord Main communication link between the brain and the rest of the body.

1. Cerebrum: THE BRAIN PARTS voluntary, or conscious, activities of the body also site of intelligence, learning, and judgment

Cerebrum: Define the lobes pg. 903 Frontal Lobe: Temporal Lobe: Parietal Lobe: Occipital Lobe:

Pituitary Gland Located at the base of the brain connected to ______________ Divided into 2 parts: __________ and Posterior Secretes hormones and ____________ _____________ _____________. Its functions are important! If the gland produces too much GH (growth hormone), the body grows too quickly resulting in _____________ Too little GH causes pituitary dwarfism.

2. Limbic System: THE BRAIN PARTS emotion, behavior, and memory ____________: deep in brain deals with emotional learning (i.e. fear and _________) forms long-term memories produces feelings of satisfaction and well-being

3. Thalamus/Hypothalamus: THE BRAIN PARTS 3. Thalamus/Hypothalamus: found between brain stem and cerebrum thalamus: ________ messages from sensory receptors, relays to region of cerebrum for processing hypothalamus: control center for recognizing _______, thirst, fatigue, ________, and body temperature

4. Cerebellum: THE BRAIN PARTS Cerebellum learns movements and coordinates the actions of individual muscles when movement is repeated. i.e. Hitting a golf ball

5. Brain Stem: THE BRAIN PARTS connects the brain and spinal cord underneath cerebellum has 3 regions: _________, ___________, ____________ regulate flow of information between the brain and body

Addiction and the Brain How do drugs change the brain and lead to addiction? Dopamine: neurotransmitter that is associated with the brain’s _________ & _________centers. ________________: chemicals that send an impulse to another cell. The brain reacts to too much dopamine levels and normal activities no longer produce the sensations of rewards as they did before.

Addiction and the Brain How do drugs change the brain and lead to addiction? Addicts feel depressed and sick without their drugs. More drugs= ______________ Result= deeper and deeper spiral of _____________________________________ _____________________________________
