Unit 3 Lesson 1 Kinds of verbs, page 100

Verbs The key word in the predicate (the part of the sentence that is not a subject) is the verb. (Remember, the simple predicate is ALWAYS the verb). The verb tells us what the subject of the sentences is, has, does, or feels. Burt works at the park. He trims the trees. He loves his job. He paints the benches.

Action verbs Most verbs are action verbs. They refer to physical or mental action. The gardener feeds the ducks. She likes migrating birds best.

The most common being verbs are forms of to be. These verbs do not refer to action of any sort. They simply tell what the subject is. Burt is the gardener’s assistant. He seems afraid of the swans. One swan looks angry. In fact, the swans are hungry. The most common being verbs are forms of to be. Other being verbs: appear, become, feel, grow, look, seem, remain, smell, sound, stay, taste

Try it out numbers 1-10 page 101 In your notes please, then we will go over them.

Linking verbs A verb that expresses a state of being may also function as a linking verb. A linking verb links the subject with a noun or an adjective in the predicate. Examples: Peanut is a toad. Peanut is tiny. See how “is” links Peanut and toad and Peanut and tiny? So, in this case, this verb functions as a linking verb.

Linking verbs that can also be action verbs. Some verbs can function as either linking verbs or action verbs. The lily pond smells stagnant. OR The squirrel smells its food. The gardener felt tired. OR She felt the tree’s thick leaves.

How can you tell if a verb is a linking verb? Try substituting “is” or “are” for the verb. If the sentence still makes sense, the verb is probably a linking verb. Examples: The pigeons look comical. (The pigeons are comical) – yes The swan’s hiss sounds fierce. (The swan’s hiss is fierce) - yes

Try it out – 11-16 in your notes on page 102 On your own – 17 through 30 in your notes, please. These are due before our next Grammar period. You are responsible for completing them before then.
