Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Standard Addressed Standard 1: Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers and applications as well as an understanding of concepts underlying hardware, software, and connectivity.

How is this cart different from a desktop? Each laptop runs on one or two batteries *Two Battery units do not have the CD player attached but you can remove a battery and add the CD player Its connected to the network via wireless network cards It must be recharged regularly You arent tethered to a table when youre using the computer Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Parts of the Laptop Cart Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Locks You need both keys in the locks to unlock and open the door Be sure to lock the cart and keep the keys on your person after distributing laptops Lock the cart and remove the keys when the laptops arent being used Do not move carts with keys in locks Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Power The main power cord from the cart should be connected at all times. Each laptop has a power supply which attaches to the laptop via a thin cable with the connector. Another cable plugs into the power strip inside the cart. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH EITHER OF THESE CABLES IN THE CART DOORS. Be sure to turn the cart off (red button on back of cart) before unplugging it from the wall. Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Batteries (2 battery units) Batteries are located on the underside of the laptop with the releases shown in the figure below You should not need to remove a battery except to swap-out the right battery for the CD Rom when you wish to use a CD in some older mobile carts Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Swap out drives (2 battery units) The CD Rom resides in the right hand battery port when you need to use a CD The laptop with only one battery will not run nearly as long as it will with two batteries Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Screens Each laptop has a flat screen THAT SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED. Use only a small amount of rubbing alcohol, like what is used for eyeglasses. The caution is to make sure that the cloth is not soaked and that liquid gets into the keyboard, it will destroy the laptop. If you want to clean the keyboard, please use a cloth and do not spray directly on top the keyboard as you will destroy the computer. Do not spray the screen, the keyboard or any other part of the computer, always make sure your cloth is damp and then you clean the computer. When in doubt, check with the manufacturer! Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Printers The laser printer on the cart is black and white only. Schools should create a printer use policy. Schools are responsible for replacing the toner cartridge in the printer. Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Wireless Hub The wireless hub maintains contact with each wireless laptop only in the schools that do not have wireless throughout the building. The closer it is to the laptop, the signal will be stronger. Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

What is the signal range? About 200 with no obstacles in the way. If you have heavy furniture, room dividers or other barriers in the room, signal strength will be compromised. Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

When to lock and when to not lock? What happens during a split lunch? During a fire drill? Assembly? Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Saving Work o Students must save their work for later use in their specific folder, if they save it on the desktop it will not be there when they return. o Generic passwords will not allow students or teachers to save work. Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Please put the laptops in their proper slots in the cart Cart 1 Laptop 1 Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Open and close the doors so as not to crimp or break the wires Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Handling the Cart Keep the cart plugged into the wall at all times If you do need to unplug the cart to move it, press the power button on the back of the cart before you unplug it The cart is heavy and needs to be pushed very carefully and in control at all times Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Handling the laptop Have students carry the laptops with two hands Show them how to open and close the laptops Make sure they go to the start button and select SHUT DOWN Then tell them not to close the cover until the screen is completely black! Otherwise, other students can log in using their ID number Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Adding peripherals Speakers Headphones Projectors Televisions Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

IM, audio, video issues: IM/Chat rooms fascinate students They may open a chat room and minimize it when you approach Always check the applications bar (bottom of the screen) to see whats open but hidden Audio can make presentations more interesting but should be used judiciously Video AND audio take up a lot of disk space! Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Who will take responsibility for the carts? This differs in each building. Some Instructional Technology teachers assist in managing cart sign-outs. Some media specialists manage cart sign-outs. Get to know this person whoever it is! Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Usage and Repair Logs Maintain the carts. Provide information in case of damage or theft. Keep carts operational. Created 3/23/06 Revised 6/2/2010 Office of Information, Technology and Accountability

Updates There will be a message on the computer screen regarding updates. If this appears, allow the computer to update, it may need to install antivirus updates* or any number of other important updates. It will state at the completion you need to reboot, please all the reboot. A virus is a software program designed to infect, destroy or interfere with a computer or software program.
