Mixtures

Classification of Matter Pure substances Identifying set of properties Elements Only 1 kind of atom Compounds Bonded atoms of 2 or more elements Mixtures Properties of 2 or more substances Homogeneous Same throughout Solution Heterogeneous Different throughout colloid suspension

SOLUTIONS COLLOIDS SUSPENSIONS Homogeneous Heterogeneous Particle Size: 0.01-1nm Atoms , molecules, ions 1-1000nm Dispersed; aggregates or large molecules >1000nm Suspended; large particles or aggregates Do NOT separate on standing DO separate on standing; Particles settle out CANNOT be separated by filtration CAN be separated by filtration Do NOT scatter light DO scatter light (Tyndall effect) MAY scatter light but are not transparent Sugar water; alcohol in water; Kool-Aid; alloy (solution of metals) Paint; gelatin; foams; mayo; smoke Italian salad dressing; muddy water; chocolate milk

Solutions 2 parts Solute- what is being dissolved solvent- what is doing the dissolving Often water Water based solutions called aqueous solutions Solutions are often liquids but not always Alloys are solid solutions Can be made of gases Can be combo of any states of matter
