Circular Construction in Regenerative Cities – CIRCuIT H2020 project 1

Objectives Implement circular economy approaches for the built environment in 4 cities – to bridge the implementation gap between theory and practical action Engage stakeholders in participatory value chain partnerships Develop and demonstrate 3 innovative solutions of circular construction in 4 cities Map flows of building materials using mass-scanning approaches, to support digital pre-demolition audits and matching of supply and demand Set up a Circularity Hub: a data platform for evaluating progress of circular economy, including indicators for monitoring Develop urban planning approaches and instruments that can support cities in implementing circular construction solutions and initiate changes at system level, such as municipal spatial planning, replicable criteria for public tenders, Total Cost of Ownership and pre-demolition audits Set up a knowledge sharing structure, the CIRCuIT Academy - upscaling and replication

Partners and timeframe Cities: Copenhagen, Hamburg, Helsinki region (City of Vantaa) and Greater London 30 partners in total to represent the value chain Timeframe: May 2019 – April 2023 Budget: 9.81 million €

Solutions and demonstrations Urban mining and reverse cycles Extend life-cycle through transformation and refurbishment Design for disassembly and flexible construction 36 demonstrations: 3 demos in 4 cities for each solution

Governance and implementing CC in cities Analyse need and possibilities for including circular economy in urban planning and in building permits (Lead: LWARB) Develop replicable criteria for public tenders on construction (Lead: CPH) Develop template business cases for built environment (Lead: LWARB) Develop instruments for the dialogues with developers (Lead: CPH) Explore embedded values ​​of building materials of construction projects (Lead: HSY) Demonstrate how to implement the EU guideline for pre-demolition audits (Lead: FHH) Roadmaps for implementing urban planning approaches and governance structures (Lead: CPH)
