Social Issues in the UK Health and Wealth Inequalities National Qualifications

Social Issues in the UK Starter Task Who is living in more poverty; A street child in India? A woman on minimum wage in Glasgow with four children? Provide reasons for your answer.

Today we will Outline the meaning of geographical inequalities. Identify how environment can affect your health. 3

I can… List and explain reasons for geographical inequalities.

Focus on Health Opinion Corners You will be shown a series of statements relating to health. For each statement, think about whether you agree or disagree. You must have reasons which back up your opinion.

Poorer people are more likely to make bad lifestyle choices. If a person has bad health it is their fault for making bad lifestyle choices. The Government’s role is just to inform people about smoking and the risks, it’s up to the individual to act upon this advice. Poorer people are more likely to make bad lifestyle choices. This should encourage debate around lifestyle choices vs lifestyle chances

Health Inequalities There is lots of evidence to show that some groups of people are more likely to enjoy better health and have longer life expectancy than others i.e. everyone’s health is not equal. There are lots of reasons for this.

Health Inequalities As you watch, summarise the different causes for health inequalities. This link takes you to the FMQs- choose one and show a short clip

Geographical Location Copy the diagram below Gender Lifestyle choices Geographical Location Health Inequalities Ethnic origin Economic Status

Explaining Geographic Health Inequalities There is a wealth of evidence to demonstrate that the people living in the wealthiest areas of the country enjoy better health, lower death rates and longer life expectancy than those living in the poorest areas. Why? 10

Task Copy this onto graffiti board Individually, write down why you think depending on where you live affects your health. As a group, decide on your top 5 and be prepared to share them with the class. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Task Stand and Deliver Each group will be given a sheet with facts about geographical inequalities. You must remember all the facts- EVERYONE in the group! You cannot sit down until everyone in the group is confident that they know them all.

Geographical Inequalities The Caci Report- made all the headlines. Took a variety of statistics and confirmed the shockingly unhealthy lifestyles of a significant number of Scots. Herald newspaper summed the findings of the report - ‘Scotland the sick man of the UK with 22 of the top 25 illness areas. Emphasised the geographical divide with poverty being the main cause.

Environment How do you think people who live in these two areas lives differ? Write a list in your jotter.

Answers Housing conditions: problems like dampness in poorer areas can lead to repertory (breathing) problems, e.g. asthma. Long-term can lead to heart problems. Facilities available: Fewer shops in poorer areas selling healthy foods. Less sports and leisure facilities. Crime: Higher chance of juvenile delinquency and anti-social behaviour as well as general crime…link to alcohol and drugs To highlight issues with environment you can show the poor kids clips- you will find these in the s3 folder. There is a clip which shows how poor housing can be.

I can… List and explain 3 reasons for geographical inequalities.
