How to write an EFFECTIVE Introduction

What is the purpose of an introduction? To introduce your topic To get your reader interested To explain the purpose of your paper To lead your reader into your paper To define your thesis statement

Introduction Format: The paragraph starts off broadly. It ends very specific and detailed.

What is a thesis statement? One sentence that describes the main point of your essay. A single, declarative sentence that states what you want your reader to know, to believe, or to understand AFTER reading your essay.

Thesis Statement Requirements Can only be ONE sentence Must be SPECIFIC Must include all of the areas covered in paper Do NOT use the word “I” or “You” Use a STRONG present tense verb

Student Example of Thesis Statements By examining Edgar Alan Poe’s dark background, his accomplishments, and his poetry, an understanding can be gained of his role in early 19th century poetry.

Student Example 2 By analyzing her family background, her royal accomplishments, and her vast humanitarian efforts, one understands how Princess Diana has touched the world’s hearts.

Student Sample 3 Through the study of his rough childhood, broken family, and athletic ambition, one will realize that LeBron James overcame many challenges in order to impact the NBA and basketball world.

When you write your own thesis… 1. Do not use words like I, Me, My, You, Your, We, Us, Our…. Instead, try to use a word like “one” or “people”. Example: By exploring of Walt Disney’s early life, creative ambition, and many accomplishments, you will realize that Disney has greatly impacted the entertainment industry to become a legend. Change “you will realize” to “one will realize”

When you write your own thesis… Make sure you include all of the topics of your paper! Don’t just say: Through studying Kobe Bryant’s life, one will understand he is a great ball player. You need to be DETAILED. Be specific in your thesis statement! Try filling in the blanks for this thesis statement: By researching Kobe Bryant’s ___________ childhood, ______________ career, and ____________ accomplishments, one will understand how he ______________________________ _______________________________________________________.

When you write your rough draft.. You want to use STRONG verbs for expository writing. Try to include some of these verbs in your rough draft: Explore Examine Investigate Reveal Analyze Illustrate Determine Present Demonstrate Understand Research Realize
