Function & Vertical Line Test Unit 8

Both are functions What’s a Function? For a relation to be a function, each x-value has to go to one, and only one, y-value. Both are functions

These are NOT functions What’s NOT a function? Look for duplicate x-values, if an x-value goes to say 2 & 5, then the equation is NOT a function. These are NOT functions

Let’s Practice Yes a Function

Let’s Practice

NOT a function NOT a function The Vertical Line Test If you can draw a vertical line through two points, then it’s NOT a function

Let’s practice without a graph Is 2𝑦+3𝑥=6 a function? Solve for y 𝑦= −3 2 𝑥+6 Graph Y-intercept 6 Slope −3 2 Linear – Passes the Vertical Line Test Yes a function!

Let’s practice another one Is 𝑦 2 +3𝑥=6 a function? Solve for y 𝑦=± −3𝑥+6 The ± means there will be two answers for every input, or value of x. NOT a function!
