3 Writing Linear Equations When Given a Point and the Slope

4 What two things do I need to write an equation of a line?
Slope and y intercept

5 We will first do this by graphing.
Ex 1:Write an equation of a line that has a slope of 3 and goes through (2,3). We will first do this by graphing. Graph the point and then use the slope to create the line.

6 We have the slope. All we need is the y intercept.
Look at the graph to see where it crosses the y axis (y intercept)

7 The slope is 3 and the y intercept is -3.
The equation is y = 3x – 3.

8 Now let’s do this algebraically.
We will use the slope intercept equation to find the y intercept (b). We were given slope = 3 and it goes through the point (2,3). m = 3 and (2, 3) Substitute this information into x, y slope intercept form. y = mx + b 3 = 3(2) + b Solve to find b = 6 + b -6 -6 -3 = b

9 The slope is 3 and the y intercept is -3.
The equation is y = 3x – 3.
