1 Chapter 6 Section 2 Graphing Linear Equations and Inequalities in Two Variables Using Alterative Methods

2 Essential Question What is the best way to graph a linear equation and inequality in two variables?

3 Intercepts X-intercept: let y = 0 and solve for x (x, 0)
Y-intercept: let x = 0 and solve for y OR look for the constant (0, y) Example: 3x – y = 5 Example: x + 2y = 8 Example: 3x + 4y = -12

4 Slope Usually uses “m” as variable Vertical change/horizontal change
Rise/run (y2 - y1)/(x2 – x1)

5 Examples: Find the slope

6 Practice Graphing Using Intercepts
2x + 3y = 6 3x – y = 5 x + 7y = 0

7 Slope Intercept Form Y = mx +b M = slope B = y-intercept Practice:
Y = -2x + 4 5x – y = -2 2x + y = 4
