Thin Flange, Vertical Flange, Slid Flat, Broken Rim, Wheel Defect Gage Thin Flange, Vertical Flange, Slid Flat, Broken Rim, Flange cracked or broken Standard Steel Wheel Gage With Moveable Finger These are the two types of wheel gages used by all inspector to verify defects and record wheel readings High flange, Thin rim, Tread grooved, Built-up tread, Scrape, Dent or Gouge, Used to give rim and flange reading for billing repair card

Roller Bearing Any one shell spot 1” or large is cause for renewal.

Tread Shelled Any one shell spot 1” or large is cause for renewal.

Wheel shelling is the result of wheel rail interface that can also cause high KIP wheels Continuous Tread Shelled Any shell spot ¾” or large with continuous shelling is cause for renewal. A KIP is 1,000 pounds of pressure, wheel on rail. The railroads now have wayside devices that measure KIP’s. A KIP of 80 or higher can be cause for renewal.

High Flange 1 1/2” or more High flange is caused by rim lose.

Thin Flange 15/16” or less 9 + reading Standard wheel gage with finger used for illustration only. Wheel defect gage is used for verifying defect.

Wheels can be an expensive maintenance item If not inspected and maintained the defects can be catastrophic (Click mouse to activate do not sign) Do not allow this to happen to your railcars, the total cost of defects like these can be reduced by a good inspection and maintenance and inspection program.

Center Partition Broken Interior partition in all covered hopper cars. Partition weld cracks at the bottom, sides, or top will ultimately result in major partition failure.

Common damage to outlets and gates (From top left clockwise) Holes in the hopper slope sheet, bent outlet gate operation shaft, bent outlet gate frame, and bent outlet slide. Anyone of these can cause car to not be loaded or unloaded.

Corner Post End Ladder Stile Corner Post Damage to these areas are a safety hazard and an FRA defect.

Lever Operational and Locked Chains Secured Caps and Valves Operational Tank car outlet valve items to insure are operational and secure. If any one of these items are not functional it could affect the loading and unloading of commodity. Additional items specific to a tank car are top hatch, tank shell, safety valves.
