Link to online bulletin 2013-14 http://bulletin.ipfw.edu/preview_entity.php?catoid=31&ent_oid=1258&returnto=797 2012-13 http://bulletin.ipfw.edu/preview_entity.php?catoid=27&ent_oid=1107&returnto=690

Writing ENG W233 Or ENG W140 (the honors version of W131, which includes W233 credit as well) Take W233 as soon as you can

Editorial Style ENG W233 often uses MLA style In PSY courses we will use APA style, for which there is a unit in this course

Foreign Language The requirement is “proficiency in a foreign language at the second year level” (the 204 course) Not two years of foreign language Many people test out of some of the college courses because of their high school foreign language The normal courses are 111, 112, 203, and 204 for the most common languages, numbers may be different for some others The first year courses are 4 credit courses, the second year courses are 3 credit

Foreign Language, cont’d If you had two years of h.s. FL, then you place into 113 for Spanish, 112 for French & German Once you have taken 112 or 113 with a C or better, you can complete paperwork to get credit for 111 (8 credits)

Foreign Language, cont’d Or you can take the placement test If you place into 203, take it and get a C or better, you get credit for 111 and 112, etc. All this credit counts toward graduation You can petition to have ASL be your language, IF you have a compelling personal or professional reason (we have the application form, see your advisor)

Why Foreign Language? It’s an integral part of being a college educated person with a liberal arts degree Most American universities require foreign language for a Liberal Arts degree Although in much of the rest of the world, foreign language is part of elementary and secondary education

Why Foreign Language? See flyers from MLA on lecture page Exposes you to a different culture and way of thinking – part of the human condition Brings general cognitive benefits Helps you get certain kinds of jobs

New GenEd ENG W233 And Certain foreign language courses Can double count in GenEd and COAS in 13-14

COAS Distribution These are any courses from the appropriate department – here it is generally the department that matters, not so much the course See list in online bulletin http://bulletin.ipfw.edu/preview_entity.php?catoid=31&ent_oid=1258&returnto=797 One Math or Science course One Social Science Course One Humanities course These are above and beyond the courses taken for IPFW GenEd

Culture Studies Requirements These are the Western Tradition and Non Western Culture courses See list in the bulletin These courses can “double count” in either IPFW GenEd or in COAS distribution The Psych web page lists where each culture studies course can double count http://www.ipfw.edu/departments/coas/depts/psychology/resources/courseinfo.html
