Poetic Devices Onomatopoeia: The most direct way in which the sound of a word suggests its meaning. It is defined as the use of a word that resembles the sound it denotes. Ex: buzz, rattle, pop Alliteration: The repetition of the same consonant sounds at the beginning of nearby words. Ex: Descending dewdrops disappear Assonance: The repetition of the same vowel sound in nearby words. Ex: A tie dyed fright Imagery: Detail that appeals to any of the five senses Metaphor: A comparison of two typically dissimilar things that does not use like or as. Ex: His eyes are the blue ocean Extended Metaphor: When one metaphor is continued on over a number of lines Simile: A comparison of two typically dissimilar things using like or as. Ex: His eyes are like the blue ocean
