How was the slave trade organised? By the late 1700s, a well established trade route had grown up between Europe, West Africa and the West Indies. It was called the Triangular Trade because it had three sides.

How was the slave trade organised? - Britain In Britain traders loaded ships with textiles, rum, weapons and manufactured goods. These ships were loaded at key ports in Britain such as Liverpool and Bristol. Slave ships left Britain and headed for Africa.

How was the slave trade organised? - Africa Africans were captured by other African tribes and held in slave factories on the west coast. These slaves were sold to the traders in exchange for the rum, textiles and weapons brought from Britain.

How was the slave trade organised? – Middle Passage The voyage from Africa to the Americas across the Atlantic Ocean was called the Middle Passage. The middle passage was the longest and most dangerous part of the journey. Many slaves died during the crossing.

How was the slave trade organised? – West Indies In the West Indies traders sold the slaves to plantation owners and bought cotton, rum and tobacco in return. The ships then sailed back across the Atlantic Ocean to Britain. The goods were brought back to Britain to be sold. The ships on this voyage made high profits.

Triangular Trade The triangular trade route could take up to a year and a half to complete. Once traders returned to Britain, the process would begin again. This process was very profitable for traders who bought and sold goods throughout their journey.
