A. Taxes Why do the British need to start imposing taxes on the colonies? The British felt that the colonists should have to pay off war debts as well. Why? Created taxes on products like sugar (1764) and stamps (1765) Had to have stamp on ANY paper product. There was at least one tax that any person in the colonies would dislike. Why?

B. Increased British Presence The British begin to reject their policy of salutary neglect. What is salutary neglect? Why are their actions a rejection of salutary neglect? British create strong enforcement structure: Troops permanently stationed in America Hired enforcement agents to make sure colonists followed the tax laws VERY different from before -- used to ignore people not following trade laws

C. Colonial Response Based on these pictures, how do you think the colonists responded to the new British laws? What evidence from the picture gives you this opinion? Why do you think they responded in this way?

C. Colonial Response -- Protest Three forms of protest: Violent – rebellions, punishment of tax collectors What is the name of the group of people famous for doing this? Social – boycotts of taxed products Political – colonial legislatures respond by coming up with the famous motto “no taxation without representation” – first sign of unity amongst colonists What did colonial legislatures mean by “no taxation without representation?”

D. New Taxes The British repeal the Stamp Act, but it passes new laws that are much more offensive. The Townshend Acts (1767) – Taxes on imported tea, glass and paper Gives soldiers the power to raid houses to look for smuggled goods. Why do colonists feel that the Townshend Acts are even worse than the previous taxes?
