Minds on – hands up Simple – Put your hand up if you believe this statement or it applies to you It is important to listen to responsible adults such as parents, coaches and teachers I believe everything my parents, coaches and teachers tell me I am a leader among my group of friends

Picture discussion Discuss the following picture with your partner based on the following: What do I see? How do I respond? (How does it make me feel?) What questions do I have?

The hitler youth and the rise of fascism

Key terms Fascism: Political system where a dictator has complete social, economic and political control Anti-Semitism: A hatred and fear of the Jewish people Holocaust: The systematic persecution and killing of European Jews from 1933-1945

German expansion from 1933-1939 Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 As “Der Fuerher” (The Leader) he began to rebuild the economy through the military He also began changing laws to persecute the Jewish people He also began to build the concentration camp system, which held political and religious “undesirables”

Discussion question What does this have to do with the opening question about youth, adults, and leadership?

The hitler youth German-sponsored youth programs to build a future generation of Nazis Designed for children aged 10-18 with different programs for boys and girls Used propaganda, physical and academic education and anti- Semitism as tools

Film – swing kids Brief Background – Remember the fun of the Roaring 20s? That music and the same fashion and dances made their way across the Atlantic and caught on with European youth as easily as it did in North America. With the racist and anti-Semitic views of Hitler- controlled Europe the youth had to hide their love of jazz and swing music, and as the Hitler Youth movement gained momentum many of those same teens often had difficult choices to make.

Minds on – quote analysis As a group let’s dissect the following quote: Let’s cross out each word/phrase that is aggressive and/or points towards the idea of Nationalism In the presence of this blood banner which represents the Fuhrer, I swear to devote all my energies and my strength to the saviour of our country, Adolf Hitler. I am willing and ready to give up my life for him, so help me God How can we use the concept of Historical Perspective to connect to this quote?

Discussion question How do we see racism and discrimination in Canada today?

Picture analysis Discuss the following picture with your partner based on the following questions: What is happening? What clues indicate that? What is this source NOT telling us? What further questions do you have?
