Notes 5.1 The M.A.I.N. Causes of WWI

M.A.I.N. Causes of WWI The war started in 1914 Four “MAIN” causes Militarism Alliances Imperialism Nationalism

M.A.I.N. Causes: Individual Practice Symbol Definition (notes) What was happening (ex- what was going on in Europe that had to do with Alliance?) How did this lead to war (explain the connection between the cause and war)

A. Militarism When a country builds a large army even during peaceful times Belief that an army would gain respect and power Europe’s arms race – competition for the most powerful military Why do you need to build up your military if the world is at peace?

B. Alliances When countries make agreements to protect other countries European countries wanted to make sure they had allies in case a war broke out. Triple Alliance: Austria-Hungary, Germany, & Italy Triple Entente: Great Britain, France, Russia

C. Imperialism European countries were taking over weaker, smaller countries Europeans started to mistrust and resent each other Fighting over resources ($) What happens when there are no more smaller countries to imperialize?

D. Nationalism Europeans became very proud of their own countries Each country wanted to be the BEST and MOST powerful They feared and disliked being controlled by others

Causes: Guided Practice With your partner, write the correct M.A.I.N. cause that fits the description on your Guided Practice handout
