Engaging students with additional support needs
What we’ll cover By the end of the session you will be able to: recognise the particular barriers to engagement faced by students taught through separate provision: know of effective practice in student engagement; and identify what you can do as a student officer.
Terms you might hear Access 1 Extended learning support Profound and complex needs Multiple impairments ASN DPG 18 Cognitive impairment
Why engage? Access and inclusion is an outcome of the Scottish Funding Council. One of five principles of Education Scotland. Important to involve a broad range of students. This group is often under-represented. Equality Duty requirement to consult stakeholders. Funding cuts.
Tools of engagement Feedback, questionnaires and surveys. Course reps. Through the Students’ Association. Learning and Teaching meetings, committee meetings.
Group work In groups, think about what barriers students in supported provision might face when being engaged in the quality of their learning and teaching.
Solution planning In groups, take one of your barriers. What could be done to remove this barrier: by you? by the students’ association? by your college?
Thank you. Any questions?
