In this lesson you will learn about: Fitting a 16-ampere plug top to a cable. Link each to the relevant section below.

Inside a 16 Amp plug top A 16A plug is designed to draw a maximum of 16 Amps from a compatible socket, after which it will start to heat, burn or if it has a fuse it will blow. Question 2 You need to explain the first four steps of wiring a 16 Amp plug to a friend, who missed the practical lesson. Re-arrange the steps below in the correct order. 1) Use a knife to strip the outer insulation off the cable to the length of the plug top. Do not damage the insulation of the three cable leads during this process. 2) Cut the live and neutral conductors to half the length of the plug top. The brown is live, the blue is the neutral and the green/yellow is the earth. 3) Strip about 4 mm of insulation off the end of each conductor. The steps are currently in the correct order and must be mixed up before presenting the question to the student. 4) Solder the strip conductor ends with a soldering iron.

Question 5 Why is it important to learn how to learn how to fit a 16 Amp plug? It can draw a maximum of 16 Amps from a wall socket. Most portable equipment gets its supply from a plug socket by means of 3 core flexible cables or flexible cords. Using the wrong tools for the job can cause injury and damage to equipment. How to wire a 16 Ampere plug top - Vid01 Before you start an electrical installation make sure you: • Always use the correct tool for the job. • Ensure tools are in good condition. • Use tools correctly. • Wear appropriate PPE where necessary. • Always take good care of tools. Maintain, clean and store it properly. Using damaged tools or wrong tools for the job can cause injury and damage the equipment. To avoid injury to any person handling portable electrical equipment it is important that the equipment is kept in a safe condition. Nearly all portable equipment obtain a supply from a plug socket by means of 3 core flexible cables or flexible cords. It is, therefore, essential to fit the 16A plug top correctly. A plug is a device that : a) has two or more metallic contacts in the form of pins, b) is arranged for attachment to a flexible cord or cable, and c) is intended for engagement with a socket-outlet (SANS 3.5.4) Use a Voice over to create a video with script as is here. How to wire a 16 Ampere plug top - Vid01continued Let’s go over the method to wire or fit a 16 Amp plug top. Use a knife to strip the outer insulation off the cable to the length of the plug top. Do not damage the insulation of the three cable leads during this process. Cut the live and neutral conductors to half the length of the plug top. The brown is live, the blue is the neutral and the green/yellow is the earth. Strip about 4 mm of insulation off the end of each conductor. Solder the strip conductor ends with a soldering iron. If it is not possible to solder the ends then they must be stripped to about 8 mm, twisted together and doubled over before being placed in the sockets of the pins. Insert the conductors in their respective positions. Brown – live pin; Blue- neutral pin; Green / Yellow – earth pin. NOTE: The conductor lengths must be so arranged that if the cable is pulled out of the plug, the earth conductor must only break contact after the live and neutral conductors, i.e. it is the last conductor to break contact with its terminal. Tighten the screws so that the conductors cannot be pulled out by hand. Bind cables with cotton-type braided outer insulation as shown in FIG. 5. All inner strings and tapes must be fastened in the cord grips with the cables. Insert into a non-slip cord grip or fasten it with screw-down clamp, whichever is applicable. Screw back/replace the cover of the plug top firmly. Use a Voice over to create a video with script as is here.
