Joint study modules-win-win or double-trouble Joint study modules-win-win or double-trouble? Case: Carousel Week model Eric Buah: Carousel Week course facilitator Jarmo Pyysalo : Carousel Week Coordinator International week 2019 of Savonia UAS Date: 19.02.2019 @ Microkatu campus, Kuopio, Finland

Outline Main idea / benefit of the Carousel Week Who are involved? How does everything run in practice? Positive things in arranging the intensive weeks Challenges in arranging the intensive weeks Tips for people interested in creating such an intensive week Questions or contributions

Main idea of the Carousel Week & Who are involved? Pan European Partnership Alliance (PEPA) of Seven Industrial Management partner universities and universities of applied sciences Savonia UAS, Kuopio, Finland Jade UAS, Wilhelmshaven, Germany Joanneum UAS, Kapfenberg, Austria University of Lorraine, Nancy, France Windesheim UAS, Zwolle, The Netherlands University of Economics, Bratislava, Slovakia VGTU ,Vilnius, Lithuania The idea was first established between Windesheim UAS (Netherlands), Jade (Germany), and Savonia UAS as one step of cooperation development between Industrial Management degree programmes.

Main goal and experience gained by participating students Goal: provide an intensive internship week for students of each partner under different special themes (Savonia: SEB) To gain experience in higher education abroad. Students attain new knowledge which is relevant for their study Meet new cultures and create new friendships which could persist for a long time after international week.

How does everything run in practice? Arrangement: the coordinators of the Carousel Week: Ms Solja Ryhänen, International Coordinator Mr Jarmo Pyysalo, Senior lecturer (Coordinating with companies) and partner universities Mr Eric Buah, instructor of the course  Application calls, selection of students, travel arrangements, design and arrangements of the teaching programme, communication between partners Link to the application web page:  https://www.windesheim.nl/over-windesheim/agenda/inschrijfformulieren-events/2019/april/carousel-twee-week

Finances (what students pay, what institutions pay) The Institutes subsidize their students as they wish (E.g SAVONIA by 100 € grant / student) The host institutes subsidize the incoming students by low cost accommodation and meal possibilities Savonia’s students take responsibility to arrange their travelling and accommodation and cost of those .

Positive and not-so-good things in arranging such an intensive weeks Positive result: Good way to test the possibility for longer exchange and double degree studies (works very well). Many new friends from several institutes and countries in just one week. The themes are specialities of each institute and contain industrial visits and cases – very good feedback ( 1 negative/100 evaluations)

Positive and not-so-good things in arranging such an intensive weeks Positive result: Life experience for students: learning and getting experience of how to arrange travelling and accommodation for oneself is an important (for quite a many students) Students attain new knowledge from expert from Industry which is relevant for their study An application for ERASMUS+ for developing the system further is under construction. Not so good: The cost of travelling and accommodation has been a problem for some students.  EU-grant possibility would help the situation, and we are in good hope that the next ERASMUS+ -period will make it possible.

Tips for people interested in creating such an intensive week 1 The most important issue is to find partners (that is people in partner institutes) 2 They should be partners you can rely on 3 Share the same enthusiasm for providing their students a lifelong experience and start-up for internationalization.
