Biomes Definition: large region characterized by a specific kind of climate and certain kinds of plant and animal communities They can be freshwater,
Biomes Large geographical area of distinctive plants and animals that have adapted to that particular area. Two things determine the type of Biome: 1.
Ecosystems- Characteristics and Cycles
Warm Up Write what you think a biome is Write an example and describe that example.
Biomes Large geographical areas characterized by a certain type of climax community.
The different biomes by Adam. Tundra Biome The tundra biome environment is very cold, no trees, short season of growth, a limitation for drainage. Animals.
Biomes Biome is a term that describes a very large ecosystem. There are six major biomes. Biome is a term that describes a very large ecosystem. There.
Biomes of the World Classified by: 1) the animals that live there 2) the plants that grow there 3) the climate.
Biomes of the Earth.
Introduction to Ecosystems Ecology. Ecology is the study of organisms and their interaction with the environment. –An organism is any living thing Examples:
Biomes A drought makes vegetation scarce. What is a biome?  Group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms.
Biomes. Tropical Rainforests Physical --- Warm & humid, found near equator, sunlight constant throughout the year Physical --- Warm & humid, found near.
 Marine vs. freshwater Marine – saltwater Freshwater – rivers, lakes, etc.  Photic zone vs. Aphotic zone Photic zone – light penetrates, higher biodiversity.
By frank Vazquez.  Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. It is noted for its frost- molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation,
Region of the biosphere that has similar communities and climate.
Which Biome do you live in?. What is a Biome? An region characterized by the major organisms that live there and its climate. –Can you name one?
Biomes Aquatic Biomes & Land Biomes. Aquatic Biomes Freshwater –Location: Wetlands, Rivers, Streams, Ponds, Lakes, & Creeks –Types of Organisms: Algae,
Types of Ecosystems. Review Abiotic + Biotic = Ecosystem Producers = plants (make their own food) Consumers = organisms that eat producers Decomposers.

Biomes. Biomes are regions in the world that have their own kind of climate, soil, plants, and animals.

Adaptation An adaptation is a characteristic or trait that helps an organism survive in its environment Adaptation makes an organisms more suited to its.
Definition: A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities.
BIOMES. What is a biome?  A group of ecosystems with similar climate and organisms.  Temperature and rainfall determine the plants that will grow. 
World Biomes A variety of ecosystems that are grouped according to similar climates.

Biome Notes

Tundra Plants: arctic moss, caribou moss, arctic willow, bearberry Animals: polar bear, caribou, squirrel, penguins, voles, hares Climate: extremely cold Rainfall: less than 10 inches per year Decomposers: moss, lichens, bacteria, fungi

Taiga (Coniferous Forest) Plants: evergreen trees (spruce, hemlock, fir) Animals: hawk, owl, moose, lynx Climate: cold winters, warm humid summers Rainfall: 30 inches per year

Grasslands (North America: Prairie Europe/Asia: Steppe) Plants: tall grasses, very few trees (found around rivers/streams) Animals: bison, prairie chicken, prairie dog, pronghorn Climate: hot summer, cold winters Rainfall: 10-30 inches per year

Grasslands (Africa: Savanna) Plants: elephant grass, bermuda grass, gum tree, jackalberry tree Animals: African elephant, koala bear, lion, crocodiles, zebras Climate: hot all year, rainy summer, dry winter Rainfall: 10-30 inches per year

Deciduous Forest *NC is a deciduous forest! Plants: Pecan trees, white oak trees, carpet moss, lady ferns Animals: white-tailed deer, racoons, black bear, voles Climate: warm summers, mild winters, 4 seasons Rainfall: 30-60 inches per year

Desert Plants: Saguaro cactus, old man cactus, prickly pear cactus Animals: Dingo, fennel fox, gila monster, mouse tailed bat Climate: Hot days, cool nights Rainfall: 10 inches per year

Tropical Rainforest Plants: periwinkle, cinchann tree, banana tree Animals: chimpanzee, bearded pig, flying dragon, indian cobra Climate: hot and humid all year round Rainfall: 80 - 400 inches per year

Freshwater Often small bodies of water (no salt): lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, and creeks. Referred to as wetlands – which includes marshes, bogs and freshwater swamps. Plants: green river grasses, water lilies, algae, cattails, duckweed Animals: beavers, frogs, salmon, trout, crabs, raccoons, mosquitos, birds, amphibians

Estuaries Areas where rivers meet the sea—both saltwater and freshwater Plants: smooth cordgrass, seagrass, spike grass, sea lavender, purple loosestrife, Animals: shore birds, fish, crabs, lobsters, clams, shellfish, marine worms, reptiles

Marine This saltwater biome covers ¾ of the Earth’s surface. The Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Artic, and Southern oceans are all marine biomes! Coral Reefs are part of the Marine ecosystem. Plants: seaweed, phytoplankton, marine algae, kelp Animals: salmon, plankton, dolphins, sharks, coral
