The Case for God’s Love September 19

Think About It What are some examples from recent news of evil or suffering in our world? When we see these things we often wonder “why?”  Today we look at why we can trust a loving God in the midst of a world of suffering and evil

We Don’t Have the Full Picture If you were Job, what questions would you want to be asking of God? Listen for God’s questions to Job. Job 40:1-9 (NIV) The Lord said to Job: [2] "Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!" [3] Then Job answered the Lord: [4] "I am unworthy-- how can I reply to you?

Listen for God’s questions to Job I put my hand over my mouth. [5] I spoke once, but I have no answer-- twice, but I will say no more." [6] Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm: [7] "Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. [8] "Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself? [9] Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his?

We Don’t Have the Full Picture What did God challenge Job to do? How did Job respond to God’s challenge? Why was Job unable to defend himself? What do you think Job learned from God’s response?

We Don’t Have the Full Picture How do you think God responds when we question Him about the suffering He allows in our lives? What would He say to someone who is questioning? What kinds of things do we learn through suffering?

We Don’t Have the Full Picture What is it about suffering that helps your faith grow? Job was a righteous and successful man who lost everything. How would you offer to reach out to Job if you had lived nearby?

Evaluate Present Suffering in Light of Eternity What are some of the sufferings a Christian can experience? Listen for the contrast that Paul makes concerning suffering Romans 8:18-21 (NIV) I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Listen for the contrast that Paul makes concerning suffering [19] The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. [20] For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope [21] that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

Evaluate Present Suffering in Light of Eternity How did Paul describe the difference between his present and his future? How does this contrast help us endure the sufferings we experience? What is the difference between Christian hope and wishful thinking? Christian Hope Wishful Thinking

Evaluate Present Suffering in Light of Eternity It is not only mankind that waits future glory. What does the passage say about God’s creation in which we live? We all experience some futility and some bondage of corruption this side of heaven. How do we keep serving God in the midst of it?

Listen for what we can learn about God’s purpose. Romans 8:28-30 (NIV) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. [29] For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. [30] And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

Discover Good from Suffering For whom does God promise to work all things for good? These two phrases depict a mutual relationship. How does God intend for us to work together, back and forth in the process of our lives?

Discover Good from Suffering How might you explain to a child or grandchild that can God produce good results out of bad situations? How does God seek to change His people (sometimes through suffering)? What is God’s intention and plan for each Christian?

Application It is a fact that some people experience great suffering Some suffering can be caused by personal sin but not all suffering You might not know why you suffer this week But know that you can trust God in the midst of suffering

Application Earthly suffering may seem endless Know that it will end Suffering believers have a hope of everlasting life that lies ahead That hope will enable you to endure this week and all the weeks ahead

Application Many people blame God for their suffering Romans 8:28 can help you overcome that attitude Know that God is working everything out for good
