Galatians 5:25 English Standard Version If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

Ephesians 6:16-20 English Standard Version 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

Ephesians 6:16-20 English Standard Version 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

Praying in the Spirit 1. Praying in the Spirit is NOT a special form of prayer

Praying in the Spirit 1. Praying in the Spirit is NOT a special form of prayer 2. Praying in the Spirit, in this context, is not praying in tongues

1 Corinthians 14:13-19 English Standard Version 13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?

1 Corinthians 14:13-19 English Standard Version 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

1 Corinthians 12:28-30 English Standard Version 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

Praying in the Spirit What is Praying in the Spirit? To Pray in the Spirit is to be moved and guided by the Holy Spirit in prayer. When we are praying in the Spirit, we pray by His power and according to His direction.

Praying in the Spirit Praying with the Help and Strength of the Holy Spirit 1. The Holy Spirit helps us pray to make up for our weakness. (Romans 8:26)

Romans 8:26 English Standard Version Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Praying in the Spirit Praying with the Help and Strength of the Holy Spirit 2. The Holy Spirit emboldens us in prayer as He assures us we are children of God (Romans 8:15-16; Galatians 4:6)

English Standard Version Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Galatians 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Praying in the Spirit Praying According to the Guidance of the Holy Spirit 1. The Holy Spirit will often use the Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word) to guide us in prayer. (Ephesians 6:17-18)

Praying in the Spirit Praying According to the Guidance of the Holy Spirit 2. The Spirit will sometimes motivate or burden us to pray about something or for someone.

Charles Spurgeon on Praying in the Spirit He [the Spirit] guides us in prayer; thus, he helps our infirmities. But the blessed Spirit does more than this; he will often direct the mind to the special subject of prayer. He dwells within us as our Counselor and points out to us what it is we should seek at the hands of God. We do not know why it is so, but we sometimes find our minds carried as by a strong undercurrent into a particular line of prayer for some definite purpose.

Charles Spurgeon on Praying in the Spirit It is not merely that our judgment leads us in that direction, though usually the Spirit of God acts upon us by enlightening our judgment, but we often feel an unaccountable and irresistible desire rising within our hearts. (Charles Spurgeon, Spurgeon on the Holy Spirit (New Kensington, Pa.: Whitaker House, 2000)

Praying in the Spirit Praying According to the Guidance of the Holy Spirit 2. The Spirit will sometimes motivate or burden us to pray about something or for someone. Example: Elders / GCLI meeting and prayer time last week (planned / yet spontaneity within the planned prayer time)
