How do my marks relate to degree classes? Your marks and grades for individual assessments relate to degree classes as shown opposite. If all your marks fall in the same class band, that is what you will get! However, most students aren’t quite so consistent……. A+ or A 70-100 First class Honours [1st] B or B+ 60-69 Upper Second Class Honours [2i] C or C+ 50-59 Lower Second Class Honours [2ii] E or D 40-49 Third class Honours [3rd]

Level C You should be aware that Level C is an important part of your studies at Liverpool Hope: It will be included in your degree calculation; It is a pivotal platform on which to build excellent academic achievement at the higher levels of study.

How will my degree class be calculated? Calculating your Overall Aggregate Mark Procedure We will calculate your overall aggregate mark in TWO ways: 10:30:60 (Level C mark x 10% ) + (Level I mark x 30%) + (Level H mark x 60%). 25:75 (Level I mark x 25%) + (Level H mark x 75%). Example A student’s marks are: Level C 55; Level I 62; Level H 75. (55x10%) + (62x30%) + (75x60%) = 5.5 + 18.6 + 45 = 69.1. (62x25%) + (75x75%) = 15.5 + 56.3 = 71.8.

If the 2 marks are in the same class: You will be awarded that classification. If the 2 marks are not all in the same class: We will consider you to be in a borderline

Looking at your Detailed Profile of Marks [a] In this stage, the Board of Examiners will scrutinise your transcript, and form a judgement about the most appropriate classification for you. The Board can exercise discretion in reaching a decision, but will follow guidelines agreed by the University. The gist of 4 guidelines is summarised below and on the next slide. 1. The Board will focus ONLY on the quality of your work. The Board will NOT take into account any mitigating circumstances. 2. The Board will take into account whether your marks were in the “high” or “low” part of a classification band. 84-100 is a high 1st class, 70-83 is low 1st class; 65-69 is high 2i, 60-64 is low 2i; 55-59 is high 2ii, 50-54 is low 2ii; 45-49 is high 3rd, 40-44 is low 3rd. 10

The Board will focus on whether you reached the “high” or “low” part of a band: for your Higher Overall Aggregate Mark, for at least 50% of Level H 4. The Board will consider whether you passed assessments at the first attempt. 11

What if I don’t Pass all my assessments? If you fail one or more Level H assessments…pg13 If you simply don’t submit one or more Level H assessments…pg14 If you aren’t fit to do a Level H assessment…..pg15

If you fail one or more Level H assessments.. .. If you pass your taught blocks on aggregate and all your Level H marks are at least F+ you will normally be deemed to have passed your degree. [You will NOT have a resit opportunity.] If you get less than a grade E for a coursework assessment: your tutors will normally allow you to re-present it before June, to try to raise the grade to a pass. If your aggregate Level H mark is below 40 or you still have less than F+ on any assessment by June: you will NOT be able to graduate with Honours in July. The Examiners will decide your options, which might include: EITHER graduating without Honours; OR doing reassessment; OR retaking all or part of Level H with attendance; OR finishing your studies without taking a degree.

If you simply don’t submit one or more Level H assessments .. You will NOT be eligible to graduate in July. The Examiners will decide your options, which might include: EITHER doing reassessment; OR retaking all or part of Level H with attendance; OR finishing your studies without taking a degree. Not submitting work is NEVER a good idea! If you aren’t fit to do an assessment, follow the advice in the next slide.

If you aren’t fit to do a Level H assessment If you aren’t fit to do a Level H assessment.. DO NOT ATTEMPT THE ASSESSMENT If you miss an assessment and you have evidence of acceptable mitigating circumstances [not necessarily ”medical”], you will normally be entitled to undertake the assessment later with no penalty. By submitting any assessment you are deeming yourself fit to be assessed. Therefore, it is essential to: submit evidence of mitigating circumstances to explain absence from an exam; seek an extension if you are not able, for good reasons, to submit work on time. If, without letting the University know why, you don’t do an assessment, or hand it in late, your degree is at risk!
