How to Write an Amazing Essay In no time at all…

Introductions: This is in your own words. It introduces the reader to what the paper will be about by using a broad idea that will narrow to the main idea. One way to keep the reader from falling asleep is to provide a HOOK in the intro. Another way to keep the reader from wanting to jump off a cliff from boredom is to have a clear and concise thesis statement with a projected organization.

An example of a good introduction with a clear thesis: Mountain climbing is often viewed by many as a crazy man’s sport. Those who pursue mountain climbing as a hobby have often been diagnosed as borderline crazy. This is because people who choose this activity have been found to have an extreme desire to try to hurt themselves. However, whether this hobby is dangerous or not, those who pursue it are generally in excellent physical shape, have excellent problem solving skills, and have developed effective ways of communication What is the broad idea here? Can you identify the hook? What is the projected organization in the thesis statement?

First Body paragraph Topic sentence: Use the language of the thesis. Each topic sentence must be one of the “reasons” named in the thesis statement. TS: Those who pursue mountain climbing as a hobby must be in excellent physical condition in order to avoid injuries or even death. The rest of the body of this paragraph will provide evidence to support why climbers or generally in excellent physical condition. -they would not be accepted by the guides if they were not in top shape -even climbing steep trails as practice will increase aerobic health as well as develop bigger quadriceps and calf muscles from pulling your body weight up a vertical incline. -in order to carry heavy backpacks a person will have to do weight training to build upper body muscles to support the weight as one climbs.

Second body paragraph Although it is not obvious, those who climb develop excellent problem solving skills to help them cope with any problems they might encounter on the climb. -There are many things that can go wrong on a mountain, from faulty equipment to being caught in bad weather. -someone who has developed excellent problem solving skills will know how to protect themselves when bad weather happens during the climb. -If they have problems with their equipment, a climber will know how to either repair the equipment, or find an alternative in order to keep themselves safe on the mountain.

Third body paragraph One of the most important skills a climber has learned is to be an effective communicator because their life might depend on it. -climbers must know the language of climbing in order to be able to let others in their climbing group know if they are experiencing any problems.

Now, let’s put it all together-remember to give your essay a title! Mountain climbing is often viewed by many as a crazy man’s sport. Those who pursue mountain climbing as a hobby have often been diagnosed as borderline crazy. This is because people who choose this activity have been found to have an extreme desire to try to hurt themselves. While it seems that anyone and everyone wants to claim they have climbed the highest mountains in the world, in reality only a very few nut jobs actually succeed in reaching this goal. However, whether this goal is dangerous or not, those who pursue it must be in excellent physical shape, have excellent problem solving skills, and have developed effective ways of communication. Being in excellent physical shape is a pre-requisite for those who are crazy enough to want to climb mountains. This is because the challenge of walking up a 20 to 30 thousand foot mountain requires immense stamina ,ungodly endurance, as well as being more than a little nuts. If a person is in poor physical condition they not only run the risk of seriously injuring themselves, but put others who are climbing with them at risk as well. It is well known that more than a few climbers have lost their lives because they were not physically equipped to deal with the harsh conditions on a mountain like Mt. Everest. In fact, Jon Krakauer writes about the loss of life on a

Socrates 2 climb he participated in, mostly because climbers did not understand the dangers of climbing at high altitudes when they were physically exhausted or injured. Even if a climber is in excellent physical condition, their ability to problem solve may be the critical factor in surviving a mishap or bad weather during the climb. While a climber who is in good physical shape may be able to “muscle” their way to the top of the mountain, if they are caught in bad weather, or find that their equipment is malfunctioning, their muscles won’t do much to keep them safe. This is where the ability to problem solve is so important. For example, anyone who is in good physical condition can carry a 50 pound oxygen tank as they climb, but if the valves malfunction, or if the tank is depleted your muscles won’t be of much use. Or, if a climber who finds themselves in the middle of a blizzard that came out of nowhere, being strong will only get you so far. So, problem solving becomes critical. What to do? A climber must know at what point they need to abort a climb, or at the very least think of an alternate way to prevent injury or death.

In Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air, the ability to problem solve would have saved lives. He explains how climbers who got stranded on Everest during a blizzard did not know enough to get out of the 100 mile an hour wind and snow. Krakauer noted that knowing to dig a hole in the snow to protect yourself from the wind would have been one way to survive. In this case both big muscles and clear thinking to solve the problem of surviving both came in handy. In an effort to achieve an almost impossible goal like summiting a mountain, the skill of effectively communicating with others is also essential. While we humans like to believe we are self sufficient and have little need of the help of others, in fact, we are pretty pathetic creatures when we realize our lives might be at stake. To be able to communicate our needs while climbing the north face of K2 is a good thing. Climbers develop an acute skill of effective verbal communication

Socrates 3 in order that everyone in their climbing group be safe. In the book Into Thin Air, it is because Krakauer was able to explain clearly why the oxygen tanks were actually full that saved his and his fellow climber’s life. Had he not bothered to explain what had happened to the valves on the O2 tanks because he believed he did not need help, both he and his partner would have died on the descent. So, what is the bottom line here? Well, climbers understand that in order to achieve a goal, especially one like mountain climbing (which clearly suggests a they might need to be at a home for the mentally deranged)they must have very specific skills of communication and problem solving as well as being in top physical shape. Without these skills, the chances are really high that other climbers will find them frozen like human popsicles.
