1 S1 TEEN ISSUES PERSUASION

2 Your Job is to convince someone that YOU ARE RIGHT about a topic

3 Issues that are important to you ….
School uniforms should be banned Girls and boys should be educated separately Homework should be banned All students should have ipads / mobile phones in the classroom. Sports should be compulsory for all students.

4 Sports should be compulsory for all students.
Arguments FOR: Arguments AGAINST:

5 What does a persuasive essay look like?
Introduction: Explaining what the topic is. Whether you agree or disagree with the topic and why. Paragraphs (at least 4) Using PEEL explain each of your main ideas in detail. Explain why the arguments against your topic are wrong. Conclusion: Summarise your main ideas Finish with a strong statement explaining why you think you are right!

6 Let’s Write an Introduction together … “Sports should be compulsory for all students.”
“Did you know….” Begin with an interesting statement about children who do sport … Did you know that children who do sport are …….(healthier? make more friends/are more co-ordinated/have better time management skills …) Explain what this essay is about. Explain whether you agree or disagree with this and give three reasons. e.g. I believe that sports should be compulsory because not everyone likes sport, not everyone is physically able to do sport and some people have other interests.

7 How to structure your paragraphs …..
P. E. E. L

8 P.E.E.L POINT: Make a short strong statement about your topic EXPLAIN: Explain what you mean in more information EXAMPLE: Give an example of what you are trying to explain LINK: Link your comments to the topic showing why you are right.

9 Let’s write a first paragraph using PEEL
Sport should not be compulsory because not everyone is physically able to participate. Sport usually requires people to be either fast, strong or co-ordinated. However, not everyone has these qualities. Some people may have injuries, illnesses or disabilities that prevent them from participating. If these people were forced to participate, then they may be hurt. In this school, we have people with disabilities, injuries and illnesses. These people should not have to feel embarrassed because they struggle with certain sports. That is unfair and cruel because it make them feel self- conscious in front of others. Therefore, sports should not be compulsory as not everyone has the skills or abilities to complete and to force them is wrong.

10 NOW YOU TRY ….. “Dogs are better than Cats ….”
Agree: Disagree

11 Using your notes … write an introduction
Begin with an interesting statement about the topic (a “Did you know” questions or how people love pets) Explain what the topic is. Explain whether you agree or disagree with this topic … and give three reasons why.

12 Now write a PEEL paragraph using the following P ..
Point: Dogs are extremely intelligent and useful to society. Explain …. Why are dogs useful (sense of smell, gentleness, strength) Example … Police dogs, airport customs dogs, guide dogs Link … Link to topic saying that cats can’t do these things!!

13 TOPIC: DOGS ARE BETTER THAN CATS
Point: Dogs are extremely intelligent and useful to society. Explain: Due to their high levels of intelligence and keen sense of smell, many dogs are used in very important jobs. Example: For example, many different breeds of dogs are used at airports to sniff out illegal products. These dogs have been trained to recognise when travellers are carrying illegal foods and drugs. In addition, dogs such as German Shepherds are also used by the police to help find or control people in difficult and dangerous situations. Link: The fact that we have never seen cats being used in these situations suggests that dogs are much better than cats.
