Every time a sea change in computing and IT threatened to swamp you, we were there: Server for the masses We started changing the game when we took on Big Iron and Unix. The NT 4 release helped customers migrate to the next generation of computing, which enabled organizations to use commodity hardware for file/print and company wide applications. Enterprise Era and Y2K With the next version, we dropped the NT name and gave the product a name it deserved: Windows Server 2000. As we entered the Y2K hubbub, we also moved into the Enterprise era and brought five 9’s of reliability, scalability and accessibility to the market. Windows Server 2000 introduced Active Directory, group policies, enterprise wide security policies and centralized groups and permissions. Three years later, Windows Server 2003 launched the .NET framework, which set off an explosion of native apps that developers built using ASP.NET, VB.NET, and C#. Datacenter Era and moving to the cloud Windows Server 2008 moved us into the datacenter era, offering virtualization in the OS with Hyper-V, the Server Core installation option and much more. Windows Server 2012 brought us into the cloud era, by opening the door to any app on any cloud.
