Fitzkilism Production, Putting the Fun in Function By Mrs. Kiley Sandymount Elementary

Fitzkilism Production, Function Tables In math, functions are usually rules that work with numbers. The object you give is a number, and the reply is another number. For instance, the function rule might be "add two. The original number (input) is 3 and the new number (output) will become 5 since the rule is to add two.

Fitzkilism Production, Function Tables Function tables are an algebraic way to work with numbers. You will need to analyze the relationship between two numbers to identify the function or rule of the table. Make sure you try the function on all numbers within the table to double check accuracy.

Fitzkilism Production, Function Tables A constant is a number that doesnt change. In a function table, the rule is the constant since it doesnt change in that table. A variable is a number that changes. The input and output numbers are the variables since they can and do change according to the constant (the function rule in that table).

Fitzkilism Production, Function Table Analysis Step 1: Analyze how the input and output numbers are related. –Ask yourself: How can I get from 2 to 5? How do I get from 8 to 11? etc. –Working backward is one strategy-look at the output first, then the input. –Think about basic operations. –Think about which column has the greater numbers. Think

Fitzkilism Production, Developing Function Step 2: Develop a function or rule for the relationship. –Based on your prior analysis, how can you calculate your output number? Did you come up with the rule of adding three?

Fitzkilism Production, Checking the Function Step 3: Try to see if the function works on all sets of numbers. –If the function is adding three, check to see if it works. –2 + 3 = 5 –8 + 3 = 11 – = 27 – = 9.5 If the function works for all numbers, then that function table rule is correct!

Fitzkilism Production, Function Table Analysis Step 1: Analyze how the input and output numbers are related. What do you know?

Fitzkilism Production, Developing Function Step 2: Develop a function or rule for the relationship. What rule do you think might work?

Fitzkilism Production, Checking the Function Step 3: Try to see if the function works on all sets of numbers. Test your function on all sets of numbers. If all numbers work, then your rule is correct. Was your rule to multiply by 2? Then you are CORRECT!!!

Fitzkilism Production, Now you try!! Step 1: Analyze how the input and output numbers are related. Step 2: Develop a function rule for the relationship. Step 3: Check the rule for every set of numbers. Rule = Multiply by three

Fitzkilism Production, Try again!! Step 1: Analyze how the input and output numbers are related. Step 2: Develop a function rule for the relationship. Step 3: Check the rule for every set of numbers. Rule = Divide by two

Fitzkilism Production, One more time!! Step 1: Analyze how the input and output numbers are related. Step 2: Develop a function rule for the relationship. Step 3: Check the rule for every set of numbers. Rule = Subtract by six

Fitzkilism Production, Last one!! Step 1: Analyze how the input and output numbers are related. THINK CAREFULLY! Step 2: Develop a function rule for the relationship. Step 3: Check the rule for every set of numbers. Rule = Add 1.4

Fitzkilism Production, Function Tables Function tables are not impossible if you work through each step. Remember to analyze the numbers, develop the rule, and check all numbers in each function table. Any questions about function tables? GOOD LUCK!!!!
