APFNet Thematic Trainings: Part of APFNet’s efforts on the human resource development initiated in support of strengthening sustainable forest rehabilitation and management in the Asia-Pacific region. One of APFNet pillars to provide a platform of sharing experience and lessons from SFM in the region. Conducting “two themes”: (1) Forest Resources Management; (2) Forestry and Rural Development.

Objectives: In-depth understanding the urgent regional needs and identify the key issues/challenges and future scenarios related to SFM in the Asia-Pacific region, and find some possible solutions to solve these problems. Establish a networking to share best practices of forest rehabilitation and management which are able to be scale up in other regional economies.

Target Group: The government officials (e.g. policy makers, planners and managers) from developing APFNet member economies across the Asia-Pacific region. Most participants, as senior officials from forestry authorities, nominated by APFNet’s National Focal Point.

Overview of the previous trainings: 15 training workshops have conducted from 2009 to 2015; Around 233 officials from 20 economics in the region; facilitate mutual learning among participants and resource persons, and promote successful practices in the region; Highly recognized and appreciated by the participants.

APFNet Kunming Training Center (APFNet-KTC) APFNet-KTC was established on November 2012 at Southwest Forestry University (SWFU) and a field visit base in Puer City, Yunnan Province in Southwest China. 8 training workshops 131 participants from 18 economies

Training Workshop run by (APFNet-KTC) APFNet-KTC continually conducted two thematic training workshop during from 2013 to 2015: 7 training workshops; 102 participants from 19 economies.; Started to organize the training workshop in other member economy from 2015 (Chiang Mai, Thailand).

Five Year’s Plan ( 2016-2020) Objectives: Under the guidance of APFNet Strategic Plan 2016-2020: Create a platform in enhancing forest rehabilitation and sustainable forest management, and promoting collaboration among the Asia-Pacific economies; Serve as an outreach for APFNet to communicate and collaborate with other economies; Promote training quality and capability.

Main Tasks: Serve as training institution of APFNet Secretariat, and fully involve in the organization of thematic training programme. The thematic training themes are fixed to “ Forest Rehabilitation and Management” and “Forestry and Livelihood Development” from the previous themes.

Identification of training topic in combination with regional needs Carry out training activities in the aspects of policy, technical theory and management mechanism. Improvement of training course design, training approaches and mechanism Every Resource Person becomes a Participant, and Every Participant becomes a Resource Person.

Selection of suitable training venue Organize at least 1 training workshop each year in other member economies besides in China ( Sri-Lanka in 2016). Standardization of participant nomination and selection process Avoid some privilege to select inappropriate participants to attend the course, in order to promote participant’s contribution and workshop outputs.

Others Upgrading the value of training products Editing workshop publications Establishing Follow-up tracking mechanism of trained participants.

Workshop Date (two weeks/14days): The 1st workshop: 5-18 July; The 2nd workshop: 1-14 November. Workshop Session: participant arrival and departure: 2 days Indoor session: 8 days; field study: 4 days. Workshop Venue: China: Kunming City; Other economies: TBC (Sri-Lanka in 2016).
