EQ: How do I identify satire in fictional stories?

Defining Satire Satire: A tool writers use to critique or point out a flaw in society, an organization or an individual. Satire adds a comedic or silly element while pretending to take itself seriously. It is not simply making fun of something; rather, it helps us think about familiar things in new ways, while making fun of something is usually destructive rather than helpful.

Satirical Devices Exaggeration : To represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. Absurdity (silliness) : To present things that are silly or are ridiculous in relation to its surroundings. Reversal : To present the opposite of the normal order Parody : To imitate the techniques and/or style of another person, place, or thing.

Shrek As you watch a clip from Shrek, watch for satire (and allusions). What is the scene critiquing and how? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqafBgPWzA0

Satire in Shrek Satirical Devices Exaggeration Absurdity Reversal Princess Fiona defeats Robin Hood and his Merry Men without any help or weapons. Princess Fiona uses her ponytail to deliver a knockout punch to one of the Merry Men. The roles of the hero and the damsel in distress have been reversed. Fiona does not want to be rescued. The fight scene is an exaggerated imitation of the martial arts style and special effects, alluding to movies such as The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Satirical Devices https://vimeo.com/107109313 Exaggeration Absurdity Reversal Parody Play video before 4 satirical devices… Passcode: football

Satire in Shrek What was the scene, and Shrek in general, critiquing?  What is being critiqued or “poked fun at”? Typical fairytales. Hollywood    In what ways does it make us think about familiar things in a new way? Damsel in distress…NO!   Contrary to popular fairytales, the princess does not need rescuing by a handsome man. The role of man and woman has been changed.

In your groups, discuss… What is the primary criticism about society that is being made by the satirical techniques in Shrek? The traditional story of the knight rescuing the damsel-in- distress is not a realistic depiction of the roles filled by men and women in modern society. Current Hollywood action movies like The Matrix have become ridiculous because they are too focused on special effects.
