What is Science? What is Science? What is a theory? What is a Law? A way (or process) of knowing about the world based on observations and facts that can be proved or disproved by other scientists using accepted techniques What is a theory? A well accepted explanation of some aspect of the natural world that includes many confirmed observations, laws, and successfully proven hypothesis. Is a theory the truth? What is a Law? A description of how a natural phenomenon will occur under certain circumstances. Can a theory be a law?

Scientific Theory: Facts that haven't been proved wrong… yet! …”Explanation of natural phenomenon SUPPORTED by a large body of scientific evidence obtained from many different investigations and observations”… Examples: Cell Theory? Plate Tectonics? Evolution?

Scientific Law: Explanation of How it Happens but NOT Why it Happens… …”A statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes some phenomenon of nature. Proof that something happens and how it happens, but not why it happens”… Examples Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation Law of Thermodynamics Kepler’s Law Planetary Motion

Fact: A natural phenomenon repeatedly confirmed by observation… Examples: Sun rises in the east… Sun sets in the west… Earth takes 365 days to circle the sun… 206 bones in the adult human body…

Hypothesis: A POSSIBLE solution to an observation… A possible and testable statement that answers a question about an observation.
