What is the reason for the frequency of earthquakes ? How often do they occur? Can they be prevented and predicted?

From 1955 to 1995, there were 11 earthquakes in the region:  November 26, the magnitude of 6.5 points;  October 10, ,6;  October 1, earthquakes of 6.8 and 7.1 points;  November 18, ,6;  June 24, ,5;  January 11, ,6;  October 8, ,5;  December 27, ,6;  January 21, ,6;  November 5, ,2.

The most devastating earthquakes in the region  One of the most horrible and catastrophicearthquakes occurred in the region in 2004, its strength reached 9.2 points. In 14 countries, 235 thousand people died from this natural disaster.

One of the ways in which ESA is contributing to this area is through leading a range of activities in the framework of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Working Group on Disasters.

As shown in the images, the earthquake triggered deformations of several metres and a tsunami. Around 1400 people are reported to have lost their lives, hundreds have been hospitalized and many more thousands are thought to have been displaced. It has been estimated that up to 1.5 million people will be affected by these events.

Scientific products such as the map created by BRGM are helping us to better understand hazards. Beyond this example it is foreseen that Earth observation data will also be useful for supporting recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in Indonesia.
