Cuts Cutaway – Jump to another scene and then back Cut-in – Jump to a close up L Cut – Audio cuts at a different time Contrast Cut – Cut from one extreme to another Match Cut – Cuts from one object to a similar one Invisible Cut – Where you try to hide a cut Parallel editing – Cutting back and forth between to perspectives like in a chase scene Jump Cut – Jump within a scene

Fade & Dissolve Fades occurs when the picture gradually turns to a single colour (usually black) or when a picture gradually appears on screen Fade ins generally occur at the beginning of a film or act Fade outs are typically found at the end of a film or act Dissolve involves gradually changing the visibility of the picture. A dissolve is when a shot changes into another shot gradually

Fade

Wipe A wipe is where one shot transitions to another by moving across the screen Iris slow is a wipe that takes the shape of a growing or shrinking circle. It has been frequently used in animated short subjects. Invisible Wipe where a camera follows a person into another room by tracking parallel to the actor. As the wall passes in front of the camera, the editor has the option of using a wipe to be able to choose any other matching take of the same scene.
