Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016 Noise in Europe report Action plans 2014 (measures’ analysis) Source orientated measures Road/rail/air traffic management Cleaner vehicle technologies Noise emission regulations Low noise tyre designs ------ Common rolling stock Retroffiting of freight trains Braking system Low noise trams ---- Measures to the airplane By-pass roads / traffic re-routing Low noise road surfaces Pedestrian crossings Speed limits / traffic calimng Changes in operating conditions ------- Selected runways Night time flight bans 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016 Noise in Europe report Action plans 2014 (measures’ analysis) Measures on the propagation path Socio-economic measures Noise barriers Tunnels, dams, cuttings, embankments ------ Low screens Tram track improvement Optimisation of the modal split Reduction of freight transport Car sharing Subsidies Managing mobility demand / intelligent traffic management ----- Financial programmes specific for arirports/aircrafts: houses’ insulation, penalties for aircraft companies 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016 Noise in Europe report Action plans 2014 (measures’ analysis) Land use and urban planning Measures at the receiver Traffic bans / access control measures / car free areas / Q-zones Calming green waves Noise zoning Land use planning – quiet areas ---- No buildings around the airport, no permission to build an airport next to houses Sound insulation / sound proof windows Shielding through building parts Sound absorving façades / high low frequency absorption at façades Building desgin and structure – orientation of rooms ----- Extra insulation measures (roof) Promotion and awareness Increase public awareness Avoid the generation of additional traffic Promote public transport and encourage cycling and walking 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Noise in Europe report Action plans 2014 (summary / overview) Major roads Major railways Major airports Agglomerations Source orientated measures X Air traffic managements Road traffic managements Rail traffic managements Measures on the propagation path Socio-economic measures Land use and urban planning Measures at the receiver Promotion and awareness 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Noise in Europe report END reported data, 2012 (15/04/2016) 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Noise in Europe report END gap filled data, 2012 (15/04/2016) 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Noise in Europe report END gap filled data: details of the process Agglomerations – road exposure Agglomerations – rail exposure Agglomerations – air exposure Agglomerations – ind exposure Use exposure values of 2007 (DF4) If not available: Calculate the average percentage of people exposed at EU level (Lden and Lnight) per rail, air and industry Calculate the estimated total number of people exposed and distribute it per bands based on % at EU level + Distribution per bands: % of the dominant distribution of the country % at EU level 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Noise in Europe report END gap filled data: details of the process Major roads / Major railways Major airports Multiplication factor of people exposed (from 2007 to 2012) Distribution per bands based on the % calculated at EU level + + Distribution per bands based on the % at EU level (graphs related to Major roads data) 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Noise in Europe report Health impact assessment 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Noise in Europe report Health impact assessment 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

Noise in Europe report Health impact assessment – What’s next? Calculation of how much people are missing only focusing on END information? European GRID population Road infrastructure network in Europe Calculation of the exposure distribution for all EU based NL and CH data for roads and major roads. Conversion into HIA covering all EU (statistical approach) Is END enough or could we do more in terms of health? 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016

What is going to be / can be next? Review the HIA calculations with the WHO guidelines Achieve a complete exposure dataset for strategic noise maps and action plans Maybe a more in deep analysis of the action plans’ contents… Maybe the work related to comparability and definitions related to the END and CNOSSOS-EU… Other ideas? 20/04/2019 Eionet NRC Noise meeting, Copenhagen, 2016
