Survival and time to death of NZW rabbits following vaccination with AVA and subsequent lethal B. anthracis spore challenge (rabbit preexposure prophylaxis study). Survival and time to death of NZW rabbits following vaccination with AVA and subsequent lethal B. anthracis spore challenge (rabbit preexposure prophylaxis study). Animals were immunized with serial dilutions of the human dose of AVA on days 0 and 28. Control animals were immunized with adjuvant alone (saline with 650 μg of aluminum hydroxide gel). On day 70, all rabbits were challenged via inhalation with 200 LD50 of aerosolized B. anthracis spores. Animals were monitored for morbidity and mortality for 30 days postchallenge. Overall group survival rates at the time of study termination are shown in parentheses. *, Survival rate was significantly greater than that in the control group (P < 0.0005). Boris Ionin et al.
