Welcome to the advanced mentor training for University of Worcester students. This builds on the introductory mentor training and is designed to provide support and guidance to help you in the more complex mentoring roles you will undertake as you engage in outreach activities. www.worcester.ac.uk

The purpose of this training is to give you a greater confidence and understanding of your role as an ambassador and mentor. It will introduce you to a range of models, theories and practical skills to help you carry out the role effectively. This training will develop your mentoring abilities and will deepen and extend your communication skills Facilitator Introduce the team and provide an outline of the project. Provide a description of the project: aims, and outcomes; the roles and responsibilities of the advanced mentor and the training requirement (dates and times etc); budgets; interim and final reports; other contextual data. As an advanced level mentor you will have… • A greater degree of independent working • More responsibility; you may be working on your own without tutor supervision • More opportunity to share your enthusiasm for subject based sessions • The opportunity to get involved with extended projects either as an individual or in a team • The opportunity to provide inspiration to young people, opening their eyes to new horizons • Additional training from the project staff through a team approach Activity 1: Icebreaker   Ask the participants to pair up with someone they don’t know. Introduce themselves and share their experiences so far of being a mentor. How do they feel about taking on more responsibility as an advanced mentor? Then ask individuals to introduce their partner to the group. www.worcester.ac.uk

The key aim of working as an advanced mentor is to engage with potential students: To help them to raise their aspirations, self belief and attainment. To improve their understanding of the HE options available to them and of the benefits of HE. To prepare them for HE so that they have a better idea of what to expect once they start their course. This will include young people from backgrounds where participation in Higher Education is low. www.worcester.ac.uk

Additionally you will have the opportunity to raise the profile of The University of Worcester amongst not just prospective students but also parents, teachers, careers advisors and the general public. www.worcester.ac.uk
