The March on Washington DC 1963 In 1963, Black leaders decided to march on Washington. It was to be a march for ‘Jobs and Freedom’ and to protest at the slow pace of integration. Other organisations were invited to take part (eg. the National Council of Churches, United Auto Workers and the American Jewish Council) and White marchers were welcomed.

... President Kennedy met the leaders in June and outlined his proposed Civil Rights Bill. He was anxious the march might interfere with the passage of the Bill in Congress and that the march might get out of control. He was told the march would be peaceful and moderate

28 August 1963 On 28 August 1963 some 250,000 people marched to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC Lincoln had been the president behind the Emancipation Proclamation - abolishing slavery. The location was fitting. They came from all parts of the country; by plane, car, bus, train and on foot - nearly a third were White

... At the end of the march, King gave his most famous speech – the “I Have a Dream” speech Speech
