Jeremy Phillips Director of Research Road Safety GB What does the client want?

Who is the client? Road Safety Managers Designers Maintenance engineers Road Safety Auditors Transport planners Enforcement Public health Your peers The rest of the road safety community Politicians Civil servants / scrutineers The public

The Intelligent Client Do you they know what they want? Can they express what they want in an answerable format? Do you need to guide them? Can they assess the quality and value of what you provide? Does scrutiny end with your immediate client?

Barriers to servicing the client Large scale / national data sets Consistency in collection The availability of data that has a utility value Connectivity between data sets Exchangeability of data Timeliness of data collection and release

Raising client expectations Intelligently commissioned analysis …derived from… Reliably gathered data and intelligence …that is… Professionally analysed …and… Appropriately compiled

Creating intelligence from analysis Meaningful answers to intelligent questions Immediate potential for practical application Capable of driving policy and practice Intelligence that is accessible, comprehensible and useful to all potential users as well as the commissioning client

A future landscape? Safe Systems? National targets? Organisational and partnership performance tracking? National scrutiny of performance and methodology? Increased funding for research? Increased expectations for evidence led practice and policy making?

Future expectations? Understanding the effectiveness and value of Safe System components individually and collectively Performance tracking local and regional contributions towards national objectives Understanding Vision Zero vs Net Gain Contributing quality analysis for national scrutiny Undertaking more local research, monitoring and evaluation – and contributing to larger national studies A Safe System focus with attendant requirements to understand the effects of each component of the System individually and collectively? National targets and objective setting? Local strategies and operational planning contributing towards a national strategy National scrutiny over the implementation of a Safe System approach and the effectiveness of local and regional contributions. Improved investment in road safety research – focussing on all elements of the Safe Systems model - combined with a higher level of expectation for evidence based policy making and practice in local, regional and national initiatives
