Matter and Chemical Change Visual Dictionary

Melting The process of solid turning into a liquid.

Evaporating The process of liquid turning into a gas

Condensation The process of gas turning into a liquid

Freezing The process of liquid turning into a solid

Sublimation The process of gas turning directly into a solid or solid turning directly into a gas.

Properties Characteristic that describes a specific substance

Physical Properties Property that describes the physical appearance or the composition of the substance

Chemical Properties Description at how the substance interacts with other substances

Hardness Measurement of how resistant a substance is against other substances More resistant Less resistant

Malleability How capable the substance is to be hammered and shaped out. malleable Not malleable

Ductility How capable the substance is to be stretched into a wire like shape. ductile Not ductile

Crystal Shape It is how the crystal is arranged or formed. How they are shaped either cube like or pointy liked.

Solubility How much of the substance can be dissolved into a solvent

Density Amount of mass in a given volume of a substance

Conductivity How well the substance conducts electricity

Melting Point The temperature at which the substance starts to turn into a liquid

Boiling Point The temperature that the substance starts to turn into a gas.

Pure Substance It is a substance made of only one kind of matter.

Element Pure substances that cannot be broken down into other substances

Compound It is a Pure substance that can be broken down further into elements

Mixture It is when you can break down the matter even further.

Solution It is a mixture that can be separated using physical means, but is homogeneous in appearance.

Mechanical Mixture It is a type of mixture you can physically separate and you can distinguish each item inside the mixture.

Suspension It is a type of mixture at which tiny particles are held within one another, can be separated out.

Colloid A type of mixture that the particles are held within one another but they cannot be separated

Aqueous Solution It is a solution that has water as its solvent.

Physical Change Change in appearance or state but it does not change the composition

Chemical Change Change that results when two substance are mixed from one another and creates a whole new substance

Endothermic Reaction Chemical reaction that absorbs energy

Exothermic Reaction Chemical reaction that releases energy
