What is carbon dioxide? Chemical Formula: CO2 Colorless and Odorless Gas Is created in nature and by humans Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes global warming http://images.sciencedaily.com/2008/01/080103135757-large.jpg

Creation of CO2 Natural processes: Removal processes: Animal respiration Ocean-atmosphere exchange Volcanic eruptions Removal processes: Plants Oceans http://co2.utah.edu/jpgs/carboncycle.jpg

Human Factor Electricity Natural Gas Transportation http://www.tablelamps.us/table-lamp-422.jpg * Please be aware that there is a difference between gasoline (which you use in the car) and natural gas (which you use on the stove). http://www.linusruzicka.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/b_02traffic.jpg http://www.efficientairconditioningtx.com/sites/107312/digital.jpg

More Human Facts When in balance, the total carbon dioxide emissions and removals from the entire carbon cycle are roughly equal. Human activities since the Industrial Revolution in the 1700s has drastically increased carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere. http://www.picturexone.com/business/industry/novosibirsk-industry-pic.html

Remember though, you can’t see the carbon dioxide. Factories use energy for heating and electricity. This causes carbon dioxide. Where does it come from? That was too easy. Remember though, you can’t see the carbon dioxide. The white clouds you can see is steam. It is also made when oil or gas burns. It was a cold day. The steam condensed into the white clouds. Carbon dioxide comes from all these things. Think about the things you do that produce carbon dioxide. UK emissions, 2004. End presentation

More on Carbon Dioxide Courtesy of: www.climatechoices.org.uk/present/Cars_carbon_dioxide.ppt Cars and trucks make carbon dioxide which is causing climate change. How do they make the carbon dioxide? With British to American translation from: www.translatebritish.com

How do cars make carbon dioxide? Cars, trucks and buses need fuel to make them work. Where does gas and diesel come from?

Making gas and diesel Gas is made from oil. Oil is made naturally when fossilized sea creatures become buried deep underground. Oil is called a ‘fossil fuel’. The oil rig brings the liquid oil to the surface and the tanker takes it to the refinery. Oil contains lots of carbon but it is not yet carbon dioxide.

Making gas and diesel The oil refinery converts the oil into gas, diesel and other useful materials.

Tankers deliver the gas and diesel

Cars use the gas and diesel Cars and trucks have engines that burn gas or diesel. This gives the energy to move them along the road. When the gas and diesel burns, it is converted into carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide escapes out of the exhaust pipe. Carbon contained in the oil is converted into carbon dioxide gas in the air. This adds to climate change.

Take Home Message So burning the gas or diesel makes carbon dioxide. Think about ways to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is made by cars and trucks. End presentation
