Becoming A Training Practice Quotes need references please

Time Impact & Requirement of a Nurse Mentor Time Impact on Surgery: Placement review at the beginning, middle and end of the placement, between the student & mentor, these should be around 30 minutes of protected time to review learning and progress as well as signing off completed objectives. Allow catch ups within Treatment Room Clinics, 1 x 10 minute catch up is required per clinic. Requirement of a Nurse Mentor: Mentors do not have to spend the whole placement with their students or have their student in all their clinics The Nurse Mentor just has to be available for the student to contact for 40% if their placement. Conduct an initial meeting with the student during their induction to establish their previous experience and required learning outcomes. External Spokes: Students can also go on external spokes, meaning they can have a day or half day experience at places such as; local pharmacies, Nursing Homes, Hospices and hospital labs.

Mentorship Levels SLIP TRAINING: Level 1 mentorship course, able to take 1st year students, ½ day course. MSLAP TRAINING: Credit or Non-Credit bearing mentorship course, able to take 1st, 2nd & 3rd year students. 3 x training days & 5 months to complete associated portfolio. SIGN OFF TRAINING: Must have completed MSLAP. Sign off level means you are able to mentor Return To Practice student nurses and transitional placements and sign students off on their final placement. Consists of 1 day training and 1 student placement. MENTORSHIP UPDATE: Every 12 months all Mentors (years 1, 2, 3) must do a 2 hour update.

Sign Off Mentorship Sign Off mentorship is the next stage from MSLAP There are many Return to Practice (RTP) and transitional students who are needing sign off mentors to complete their training, however there are currently not enough mentors at sign off level to complete this. Those that have done this have had excellent success in employing sign off students, newly qualified. As well as RTP. In order to become a sign off mentor, you will have needed to complete MSLAP training. Once sign off training has been completed, the mentor will be assigned a sign off student under the supervision of an existing sign off mentor to meet the NMC requirements.

Nurse Mentorship Backfill Payments Practices can claim backfill for time away from practice during training. Whilst your nurse is training, your practice can claim backfill up to £17 per hour. SLIP TRAINING ½ DAY COURSE = £68 backfill MSLAP TRAINING 5 MONTH COURSE= Non-Accredited and Accredited MSLAP Course (3 days across 5 months) 112 hours £1904 Mentorship Update 2 hours = £34 The tariff for Student Nurses is £72 per week. Backfill and Tariff are claimed from HEE by The East & West Cheshire Training Hub and will then be paid directly to your practice. Please add another slide after this explaining about filling in the data capture toolkit and being audited

OnlinePARE (Practice Assessment Record and Evaluation) Online PARE is a website used by students and Universities to monitor and document student placements. Mentors will be able to complete and report on the required domains and document placement time sheets. Online PARE is also somewhere both students and mentors can leave feedback about their placement. The Training Hub can also access OnlinePARE to quality assure our practice placements Your Nurse Mentors will receive OnlinePARE accounts, which will also allow them to access supportive tools throughout their mentorship. OnlinePARE training will be provided during mentorship training.

Data Capture & Audit The Data Capture Toolkit is a document used to audit placements before they take their first student nurse, this is to ensure the placement is suitable and to set up a placement profile for your practice. The Data Capture Toolkit will include things such as: Potential spokes, service overview, information about your practice.

Student Testimonials At the end of a placement students should be asked for feedback as this is an important representation of your surgery as a training practice. Feedback can be filled in on OnlinePARE and is visible future prospective students looking at the opportunities and type of placement you provide. Testimonials from previous students in East and West Cheshire “I have never enjoyed a placement so much, each and every member of the practice have been welcoming and friendly and I am so grateful. The nursing staff I have worked with have been inspiring, they really are a credit to the centre. Primary Care is definitely the direction I hope to take my career in, the conduct of care and professionalism I have witnessed over this placement have helped me come to this decision.” – Clare Bailey, Student Nurse from 2018 “Excellent mentorship, well planned placement, so much compassion, respect and support was shown to me. Protected learning time was really useful during the long waits between clinics.” – Olivia Nixon, Student Nurse from 2018
