Arrogance In Islam

Being Arrogant is defined as having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one’s own importance or abilities.

I will be discussing two important points to explain how ugly its is for a person to be arrogant

A characteristic featured in Shaytan and his followers Shaytan was the first creation of Allah (SWT) to show arrogance towards Him as he refused to prostrate to Adam a.s . Shaytan believed he was better than Adam as he was created from fire and Adam a.s was created from clay. Arrogance is one of the characteristics of Shaytan. Therefore, whoever has the intention to be arrogant, should recognise that he or she is acquiring an attribute from the Devil. Arrogance may result in a person being deprived of paradise. This could be seen in the following two hadiths:

First Hadith: Second Hadith: Abdullah bin Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) said, "He who has, in his heart, an ant's weight of arrogance will not enter Jannah." Someone said: "A man likes to wear beautiful clothes and shoes?" Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Allah is Beautiful, He loves beauty. Arrogance means ridiculing and rejecting the Truth and despising people." Second Hadith: Ibn Umar (RAA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Allah will not look on the Day of Judgment at him who lets his garment drag on the ground out of pride and arrogance.”

2) Pride does not befit anyone except Allah Whoever dares to compete with Allah, he will be destroyed and Allah will make things difficult for him “Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Allah, the Exalted, says: 'Honour is My Izar and Pride is My Cloak. Whoever seeks to compete with Me regarding one of them, shall be tormented." This is hadith is a strict warning against arrogance, which clearly shows that being arrogant is haram. Anyone who tries to be arrogant and put himself above others, Allah will bring him or her down to the lowest of the low and humiliate him

Arrogance in the time of the Prophet SAW A man was highly regarded among the companions for his relationship with the Quran and his dhikr Upon meeting this man, the Prophet SAW told the companions that the man had a touch of arrogance The Prophet SAW asked the man, “have you not mentioned to yourself in a moment that you consider yourself better than everyone else?” The man walked away from the Prophet and the Companions without saying uttering a single word and started praying The Prophet SAW sent Abu Bakr RA to kill the man, but when he came upon him he was praying. Abu Bakr came back and reported it to the Prophet SAW The Prophet SAW then sent Omar RA to kill the man. However, he found the man in sujud, thus returned and reported it to the Prophet SAW The Prophet lastly sent Ali RA to kill this man but he went to find the man, he was missing! When Ali RA returned to the Prophet, the Prophet told his companions that the man, with his touch of arrogance, was the start of the fitnah, and if he was to be killed, the fitnah would never fall upon the Ummah

What can we learn from this story? Although this man was praised among the Companions, he had the arrogance to go and pray on his own rather than sitting with our beloved Prophet SAW and the companions

The Cure Of Arrogance Stay humble and realise that we began our journey in this world as a sperm, and that our journey will end as us being a corpse. So what is there for us to be proud and arrogant of?
