Surah Al-Baqarah (2), Ayat 34 Allah Most High says: “When We told the angels: 'Bow down on your knees before Adam', they (all) knelt down except for Iblis. He refused and acted proudly and became one of the disbelievers.”

Hadith The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Allah Most High said: Greatness is My garment and majestic pride is My cloak. If anyone competes with Me for both of them, I will throw him into the Fire.”

Hadith “No one who has the weight of a mustard seed of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise. Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”

Hadith The Prophet (SAW) said: “Whoever has pride in his heart equal to the weight of a mustard seed shall not enter Paradise.” Someone asked, “A person likes to wear beautiful clothes and fine shoes.” He replied, “Allah is beautiful and likes beauty. Pride means rejecting the truth and looking down on other people.”

Hadith “Shall I tell you about the people of the Fire? All those who are coarse, domineering, and arrogant.”

Hadith “Whoever feels happy at people standing up out of respect to him, should better make his abode in Hellfire.”

Hadith “Whoever wears clothes of fame in the world, Allah will dress him in clothes of humiliation on the Day of Judgment.”

Hadith The Prophet (SAW) said, “Once a man was walking, dressed in clothes admiring himself, his hair combed, walking haughtily when Allah caused the earth to swallow him. Now he will continue to go down in it (as a punishment) until the Day of Resurrection.”

Hadith “Look to those lower than you, and do not look to those above you, lest you view the favors of Allah (upon you) as trivial.”

Hadith “When two people are together, whether walking, sitting, or riding, the one who says salam first is free from pride.” (Or the meaning could be taken that Allah will take the pride out of his heart).

Hadith “On the Day of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favors and he will recognize them. [ The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I fought for you until I died a martyr. He will say: You have lied - you did but fight that it might be said [of you]: He is courageous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire.”

Hadith (cont.) [Another] will be a man who has studied [religious] knowledge and has taught it and who used to recite the Quran. He will be brought and Allah will make known to his His favors and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I studied [religious] knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Quran for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but study [religious] knowledge that it might be said [of you]: He is learned. And you recited the Quran that it might be said [of you]: He is a reciter. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire.

Hadith (cont.) [Another] will be a man whom Allah had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make known to his His favors and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I spent for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but do so that it might be said [of you]: He is generous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire.”

Hadith "A man will continue to be arrogant until he is written among the tyrants and what strikes them will strike him.” Why does someone with arrogance and pride become considered a tyrant?

Pride Having pride leads to: ◦ Anger, Yelling, Screaming ◦ Humiliating, Embarrassing others ◦ Hate, Grudge, Revenge ◦ No Tolerance of others’ actions ◦ No Patience of others’ mistakes ◦ No forgiveness of others’ shortcomings ◦ Finding faults in others ◦ Criticizing others

Pride Having pride leads to: ◦ Thinking you are better than others ◦ Looking down on others ◦ Jealousy ◦ Complaining about others ◦ Complaining about your circumstance ◦ Always being negative ◦ Not being thankful ◦ Not serving and helping others ◦ Selfishness

Pride Having pride leads to: ◦ Self-Admiration Surah 17, Ayat 37 ◦ “And do not walk about in the land haughtily, for you cannot split the earth nor reach the mountains in height.”

Hadith Prophet of Allah (s) said: “The wise person is he who takes the few good deeds of others as abundant in number and considers his numerous good deeds as few.”

Hadith "The thing that I fear most for you is the minor Shirk: Riyaa.” "Should I not inform you of that which I fear for you even more than the dangers of Dajjaal? It is the hidden Shirk: A person stands to pray, and he beautifies his prayer because he sees the people looking at him."

Showing off Symptoms of Riyaa (Fame/Showing Off) ◦ Love of praise ◦ Fear of criticism ◦ Greed for other’s possessions

Opposite of Pride & Arrogance Humbleness and Humility

Hadith Anas said, "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had a she-camel called al-'Adba' which could not be beaten in a race. A bedouin came on a youngish camel and beat it. That was difficult for the Muslims and, recognizing that, he said, 'It is a right of Allah that nothing elevates itself in this world, without Him then bringing it low."

Hadith “Allah has revealed to me that you must be humble towards one another, so that no one wrongs another or arrogantly boasts to another.”

Humility One of the clearest examples of his humility, is that the Prophet (S) would sit in the Masjid with his companions and if a stranger or visitor came to the Masjid he wouldn't know who the Prophet was until he asked, "Which one of you is Muhammad"? This is because he would not sit, dress, or be treated in a way that distinguished him from the people.

Hadith “Shall I tell you about the inhabitants of Paradise ? They are very meek and humble persons. And shall I tell you about the inmates of Hell? They are very ignoble, uncivil and proud persons.”
