Knowledge Center Option for Libraries How do we reduce multiplication of efforts in collecting, accessing, processing, archiving and disseminating information resources? How do we pay to authors and publishers the royalties that they deserve to receive as a result of their creative and financial investments? How do we use electronic and communication technologies to serve the users better and yet achieve the first two objectives?

The Knowledge Centre An extended version of a library. A collection of knowledge in the form of subject-problem-solution information that pertains to a specific topic or subject of interest

The Global Role of Knowledge Centers As Knowledge Centers are accessible through the Web, they assume global roles. The varied concepts and subjects Selectivity and comprehensiveness Institutions to establish Knowledge Centers/ Institutional Repositories Rationalization of efforts, finances and resources Accessible to every body in the world. Information and knowledge resources available globally. need to be identified on every subject, irrespective of linguistic, proprietary, geographic and other constraints.

The Global Role of Knowledge Centers No need to create similar centre in other parts of the world, for institutions specializing on same subjects could contribute to the development of the Knowledge Center on that subject at an institution that had maximum content on the subject. Should have a common understanding of promoting and sharing resources of Knowledge Center. The knowledge centers , as a result can fulfill the global obligation of making knowledge freely available to users in the world.

The Global Role of Knowledge Centers To make each knowledge center an operational unit, the knowledge center should charge a small fee from users for downloading such texts which are copyrighted. If the knowledge center makes available the copyrighted content, the royalty so collected could be shared between the knowledge center, the publisher and the author/s. The academic libraries, anyhow, will have to have access to various e-journals and e-books on a variety of subjects. The Knowledge Centre concept can mostly apply to such academic libraries which are specifically covering one or a few related subjects. For public libraries, though the subjects requirements are varied, still special content could be developed to serve the community requirements.

Conclusion Each Library/Information Centre should do in-depth specialization in at least one subject A Knowledge Centre should get established on that subject with resources available in as many parts of the world as possible and in as many languages as possible. Each Knowledge Centre should share resources with institutions and users from all parts of the world, directly or through networks at a reasonably low charge or no charge; Each institution developing institutional repositories and knowledge centres should be a part of global networks Each knowledge centre should function as one-window access point on a subject and the coverage of content should be comprehensive and selective Information provided by the knowledge centers, especially through public libraries should help users to economically gain. For example information on skills, small enterprises, vocations etc. would be useful to general public.

Conclusion Libraries should become knowledge centers and adopt at least the following functions: Share resources with a larger audience. Market publications, services, products etc. Create a continually evolving body of knowledge on the chosen subject. Evolve collective brainstorming, offer social networking. Entertain feedback and multiple views on a given subject and record such views. Invite individuals, researchers and institutions to join the dialogues by contributing articles, papers, comments on a chosen topic or any topic. Achieve collective understanding of the subject in question through a consensus-building system. Undertake research and analysis. Arrange training for professional development
