Landforms Real-World Examples

Plain Large area of flat or gently sloping land

Basin Low region surrounded by higher land

Delta Land built up at the mouth of a river.

Isthmus A narrow piece of land connecting two larger pieces of land.

Strait narrow channel joining two bodies of water

River Large stream of water that flows through land

Bay Part of a body of water that extends into the land

Mountain Raised area of land, usually with steep sides; the highest landform.

Lake body of water completely surrounded by land. Usually fresh water.

Gulf Part of a body of water that extends into the land Gulf Part of a body of water that extends into the land. Larger than a bay.

Peninsula A narrow piece of land sticking out into the water and surrounded by water on three sides.

Plateau Flat or gently rolling land higher than the surrounding land.
