1 Landforms

2 Landforms Notes Write a definition in your own words
Give three examples of that landform 3 examples need to be located on different continents For each example give name of landform, name of country where it is found, and latitude/longitude. Sketch what that landform looks like

3 Cape Point of land extending into the sea Cape of Good Hope
South Africa 34.3° S, 18.4° E Cape Cod USA 41.6° N, 70.2° W North Cape Norway 71.1° N, 25.7° E

4 Continent Large continuous masses of land
There are 7 continents on Earth

5 Island Body of land completely surrounded by water
Smaller than a continent

6 Mountain Landform that stretches above the surrounding land
Typically considered ‘mountain’ if over 2000 feet above sea level Usually forms a peak

7 Hill Extends above the surrounding land
Less than 2000 feet above sea level Less steep than a mountain

8 Plateau Broad expanse of high and flat land

9 Mesa Tall flat-topped mountain with sides that are steep cliffs
Spanish for table

10 Plain Low land Flat or rolling

11 Basin Low lying area surrounded by elevated land

12 Valley Depression in the land between two steep areas

13 Canyon Deep narrow depression formed by water running through an area

14 Peninsula Mass of land surrounded ALMOST entirely by water
Connected to mainland by narrow neck

15 Ocean A body of salt water composing a large part of the hydrosphere

16 Sea A large body of salt water connecting to an ocean

17 Gulf A large bay connecting to an ocean or sea

18 Bay A large body of water connected to an ocean or sea
Formed by an inlet of land

19 Lake Large body of still water surrounded by land, with the exception of a river, stream, or any moving water to feed the lake

20 River Natural water source flowing towards an ocean, sea, or another river

21 Headwaters Source of a river
Furthest point from where the river flows into a larger body of water Headwater

22 Strait Narrow channel of water connecting two larger bodies of water

23 Delta Formed at mouth of river
Where it flows into a larger body of water

24 Archipelago A cluster of islands

25 Isthmus A narrow strip of land connecting two larger bodies of land

26 Oasis Isolated area of vegetation in a desert
Typically near a water source Provides habitat for animals and people

27 Today’s Activity Complete the example section of your landforms chart.
Your examples must come from different continents i.e. you may NOT have Cape Cod, Cape Canaveral, and Cape Chidley For each example, you must put the name of the landform, the name of the country where you find it, and the name of the continent where you find it. i.e. Cape Cod- United States- North America If it is a continent or ocean list it. For bodies of water (seas/bays/gulfs) list the ocean its part of. If you don’t finish it is homework!
