Presentation transcript:

An organism MUST have all 6 characteristics to be considered living! What is Life? An organism MUST have all 6 characteristics to be considered living! 2. Chemicals of Life 1. Cellular Organization 3. Energy Use 4. Respond to Surroundings 5. Growth and Development 6. Reproduction

The cell is the basic building block of all organisms 1. Cellular Organization multicellular unicellular The cell is the basic building block of all organisms

2. Contains chemicals of life: water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, amino acids most abundant: water Lipids (fats) and proteins are the building materials of all cells.

All living things use energy for growth and repair. 3. Energy Use All living things use energy for growth and repair. Whether an organism is a producer, consumer, or decomposer, its energy ultimately comes from the sun.

4. Respond to Surroundings stimulus: a change that causes a reaction response: an action or change in behavior

5. Growth and Development Development: process of change that creates a more complex organism Growth: process of becoming larger

Sexual reproduction: requires two parents who combine genetic material Asexual reproduction: requires one parent - offspring is identical to parent
