This webinar will introduce you to a literacy software, called read&write gold, that is available to all faculty, staff, and students in supporting all reading and writing activities. Today’s webinar will provide information on the key features, their functionality and potential applications of the read&write gold program that is available to students, faculty and staff at Johnson & Wales University.

Literacy Software Improves reading fluency and comprehension read&write benefits: Improves reading fluency and comprehension Facilitates research, writing, studying, and test taking Integrates with mainstream applications Read&write gold is universally designed software that can help to increase the success of all students. Read&write provides support to students in reading, writing, studying, and research. The literacy software integrates with common applications to ensure students build confidence and independence, reach their potential, and succeed in their academic pursuits.

Literacy Software read&write features include: Teachable word prediction, phonetic spell checker and picture dictionary for writing support Text-to-speech and programmable speech-to-text Tools for collecting and organizing research Its features include a phonetic spell checker, picture dictionary, talking calculator, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, translator, screen shot reader, fact finder, vocabulary list builder, as well as scanning, concept mapping, word prediction, screen masking, PDF aloud, word banks, voice notation, and highlighting.

How does it work? Floating toolbar provides easy access to accessibility tools Seamless integration into mainstream applications How does read&write gold work on your computer? The software contains a discrete, customizable floating or anchored toolbar with easy access to accessibility tools that work with mainstream applications such as internet browsers, MS Word, and PDF files.

Reading Toolbar Converts text to speech for read out loud Dictionary Screenshot Reader Picture dictionary Other Format Readers Sounds Like and Confusable Words Daisy Reader Scan Screen Masking Play (read aloud) Translator Rewind, fast forward, and stop PDF Aloud On the reading toolbar, there are many tools that will help support students in their reading comprehension. The Reading Toolbar will be able to have inaccessible text read aloud, including text embedded within an image, locked PDFs, or online applications. Select the text on the computer and it will be read aloud. Or select an unknown word, and a picture or definition can be provided to help with reading comprehension.

Online Translator Allows single words, paragraphs, or blocks of text to be translated into multiple languages Works with any digital content Google Chrome Plug-in Read&write also provides a translator within the program. In Google Chrome, there is a read&write plug-in available that will support making the web, google docs, and files accessible to everyone. Additionally, the Google Chrome plug-in provides access to a more comprehensive online translator with many languages available.

Screenshot Reader Read aloud inaccessible text including text embedded with an image, locked PDFs, or online applications User can surround, hover, or draw freehand around the text they are interested in Text is then read aloud with highlighting and can even be exported directly into a Word document The Screenshot Reader provides read out loud for “locked files”. Using this tool, you are able to select any part of the screen and text will be read out loud with highlighting. It will convert the “screenshot” text to a Word document as well.

Word prediction, speech-to-text, and research support Writing Toolbar Word prediction, speech-to-text, and research support Spell Check Fact Finder Prediction Fact Folder Dictionary Fact Mapper Picture dictionary Screen Masking Word Wizard Speech Input Sounds Like and Confusable Words Translator Verb Checker Word Cloud Play, Pause, Stop Voice Note The writing toolbar provides word prediction, speech-to-text, and research support. The Fact Finder tool allows students to research information quickly by searching the web for relevant information about a topic. They can use this tool in conjunction with the Fact Folder that will prepare and store information for research assignments or when writing reports. This tool can capture text and pictures, classify facts, and record their source, as well as creating a bibliography. Another writing tool is the Word Prediction that learns your writing style to complete the word you are typing or predicts the word you might want to use next, along with definitions. Verb Checker helps determine correct verb conjugation. Once past, present, or future tense is selected, multiple verb conjugation options are provided.

Tools to Support Writing Phonetic Spell Checker Sounds Like and Confusable Words Analyzes students’ spelling and returns suggestions with definitions for common spelling errors Phonetic spelling and flexible spelling errors, such as typing without vowels, are also identified Identifies words that sound the same (homophones) but are spelled differently (e.g. "there" and "their") Identifies words that are commonly confused (e.g. "through" and "thorough"). Choices and definitions are displayed. Highlights of the writing toolbar include a phonetic spell checker and a sounds like and confusable words checker. The phonetic spell checker will analyze students’ spelling and return suggestions with definitions for common spelling errors. Additionally, the tool will provide support for phonetic spelling and flexible spelling errors, such as typing without vowels. The Sounds Like and Confusable Words tool will identify words that sound the same and commonly confused words. It will provide choices and definitions for each identified word.

They have access to read&write on JWU computers or on their personal devices and read&write can support students with all subjects. Be sure to remind students about using read&write while in computer labs and libraries, as well as on their personal computers.
